    Stories:
When I was about 8-10 my friend and I were hooked on Contra. I went to his house almost every day after school and we played Contra. We got to where we could beat it without dying. We even made up several 2 player competive games within Contra. What fun.

I can remember when Mario 2 and 3 came out, my (spoiled) friend's mom bought the game that day. On both occasions we stayed awake as long as it took to beat the games. What fun.

To this day is still have fun. It was only 3 yars ago that I finnally beat Castlevania. My friend and I vowed that summer that we would beat it. We even taped ourselves playing to figure out the bosses patterns.

But alas nothing beats getting a bunch of poeple together and playing a season of Tecmo Super Bowl. When a reciever does the "super jump" on a big play, nothing is more exciting.

What is your favorite game on this system?

gi joe, either that or excitebike

What games surprised you? Infuriated you?

surprised me? hmm, I thought super mario bros was pretty surprising, I was used to the atari 2600

Infuriated: Toss up between Ninja Gaiden and Battletoads. I wish Ryu could just f%#$&@ climb rather than wall jump to get up those pillars! And Battletoads-well, Rare games are sometimes like a journey into S&M. Painful to play, but still makes you go back for more.

Do you remember the first time you saw the system in action? What game was it? What was your reaction?

Memory is a little foggy there. I know I saw commercials for it. The one that pops into my head is the Zelda commercial with the dude going around hollering "Zelda! Zeelllldaaaa!" while showing in game footage. I first saw a deck in action at a schoolmate's house. I just met him and invited me over to play Nintendo. He turned on the deck and inside was Mike Tyson's Punch Out. I was mesmerized. Never had I seen graphics like this on a home system. Then he let me at The Legend of Zelda. I remember the experience: it was like a fish being out of water. I fumbled with the control pad (was still an Atari player), trying to get used to using more than one button. Of course I died...a lot. But it was a taste and my life and outlook at video games changed that day.

Did you own the system "back in the day"? How about now?

I got a action set in 1986 i think. I sold it for way to cheap to a friend in high school. I recently traded a music cd for my firends non working NES, I told him it would be easy to fix, and it was.

How many games do you have for it?

maybe 40 right now. I got rid of a lot of them. HEck I even sold a complete dw 3 to a kid my baby sat for for $12(i know if you want to shoot me now, go ahead)

Any stories surrounding the system that you can share with us?
Staying up all night trying to 'finish" exvitebike with myu best friend.

I drove over 60 miles to a gamestop to get a bubble bobble 2 cart only for $15 but when I got there I found out it was gone.

I remember redeeming that $5 videogame voucher at toys r us so I *only* paid 50 bucks for dragon warrior 3 instead of 55.

There are probably others, but I cant remember.

    - What is your favorite game on this system?
Well, probably the SMB games. The first one mostly because it's classic. 2 and 3 are a great time once in a while too.

    - What are some of your other favorites?
I'm no good at Zelda, but I do like Dragon Warrior. I love both games. But I've gotten much further in DW than Zelda. Too bad I can't try out my DW game again which is up to the Dragon Lord because it'll erase the game.. if it's still there. Also Startropics. A game that DESERVES to be remade.

    - What games surprised you? Infuriated you?
    Surprised and infuriated? I dunno.

    - Do you remember the first time you saw the system in action? What game was it? What was your reaction?
1985. Rescue Squad Christmas Party. Kids in a back room playing a game of some sort. Didn't know fully what it was, but I did remember the game. Super Mario Bros. World 1-2. I remember the blue bricks and black background. I remember just a little, but it was enough to make me want one.

    - Did you own the system "back in the day"? How about now?
Yes. And it's the same one too. Still works. But blinks. Been meaning to fix that.

    - How many games do you have for it?
Right now? 134 games. 20 are boxed and complete. 4 of those are dupes. And I have both Metroids.

    - Any stories surrounding the system that you can share with us?
None that I haven't said already.

    - What is your favorite game on this system?
Super Mario Bros. 3. Deep and challenging, and it kept me hooked and wanting more. I think I spent more time with SMB3 than any other NES game.

    - What are some of your other favorites?
The Legend Of Zelda (which I'm currently playing through on The Legend Of Zelda Collector's Edition for my new Gamecube as of this writing), Metroid, Chip 'N Dale Rescue Rangers, Bump 'N Jump, Marble Madness, Super Mario Bros. 1 and 2, Donkey Kong, Duck Hunt, Blaster Master, Double Dragon 2, Duck Tales, Tetris, RC Pro-AM

    - What games surprised you?
    Pretty much everything.

    -What games Infuriated you?
Who Framed Roger Rabbit. As cool as that game was, I could never get very far! And at the time, Dr. Mario (which I have for the SNES now and enjoy), Zelda II: The Adventure Of Link (very frustrating, never got that far on it, but now that I'm older and have it on GC, I vow to beat it someday)

    - Do you remember the first time you saw the system in action? What game was it? What was your reaction?
I don't remember this clearly, but it was sometime in 1989, and I know one of my friends had it and I must have thought it was the coolest thing because I begged my mom for it. She bought me the Action Set at Montgomery Ward as a birthday present.

    - Did you own the system "back in the day"?
Oh yeah, like I mentioned, got it as a birthday gift. I always begged my mom to let me play Nintendo after I got done eating dinner or doing homework. When I wasn't playing Hot Wheel cars or playing outside I was probably playing Nintendo. :P My mom even played it after I went to sleep.

    -How about now?
No. My NES died around 1995, we sold it at a garage sale for cheap to a guy who wanted to try to fix it. I wonder if he pulled it off. However, I still have the Zapper light gun that came with it. I might get another NES someday, but I'm not too sure, especially with maintenance and those pesky 72 pin connectors being an issue.

    - How many games do you have for it?
N/A today, but back in the day, I seemed to get them only for Birthdays and Christmas, so I'm guessing 7 or 8.

    - Any stories surrounding the system that you can share with us?
When I first played Super Mario Bros, I died about 30 times in that second pit. By that time a friend of mine came over and showed me how to run and jump over the pit. :P
I eventually got to 8-4, but I never was able to beat SMB1 until I got Super Mario All-Stars when I owned an SNES. However, I beat my NES copy of SMB3, but it took me quite a while!

    - What is your favorite game on this system?

My favorite game is probably Castlevania 3: Dracula's Curse. I could just play this game forever. My personal favorite game out of the CV series as well.

    - What are some of your other favorites?

Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros. 3, Legend of Zelda, Castlevania, Ninja Gaiden, Contra

    - What games surprised you?

Some obscure favorites of mine are: Dusty Diamond's All Star Softball, Little Samson, Code Name Viper, Jackal, Shatterhand, Desert Commander, Robo Warrior, Solomon's Key, Thunder & Lightning, Vice Project Doom, Battle of Olympus, Bucky O'Hare, Journey to Silius, Xexyz

    -What games Infuriated you?

Definitely Ghosts 'n Goblins. That game still pisses me off to no end. I don't believe I've ever beaten the second level. Also the final stage of Ninja Gaiden. If you die on the boss you have to start all over again from the beginning of the last stage.

    - Do you remember the first time you saw the system in action? What game was it? What was your reaction?

I first saw my uncle's NES about a year before I got mine in '88. He had Super Mario Bros., Duck Hunt, Metroid, Adventures in the Magic Kingdom and Adventure Island. I absolutely loved it and I wanted one of my own immediately.

    - Did you own the system "back in the day"?

I owned one in the 80's, so yeah, I guess I did.

    -How about now?

I've had 3 NES's total. The first one broke in about 1993 or 1994 when I was 9 or 10. My dad went out and bought a brand new one that came with Super Mario Bros. 3 (but it wasn't a toploader). That is the one that I still use today, although I replaced the pin connector with a new gold one. I also have a spare in the closet that I've only booted up to see if it works (it did).

    - How many games do you have for it?

Currently 645, since I'm trying to collect the US released games.

    - Any stories surrounding the system that you can share with us?

I can't think of any stories right now.

    - What is your favorite game on this system?

    Blaster Master (ingenious!)

    - What are some of your other favorites?

Startropics, Crystalis, Metroid, Zelda, Mega Man 2, Castlevania 3, Ninja Gaiden, Battletoads, Solstice, SMB3

    - What games surprised you?

Blaster Master: I expected a good shoot-em-up, but not an incredible adventure game in which everything matches perfectly. Faxanadu: becasue of it's great atmosphere! Startropics: a game which starts slow and gets with every level better and better, it's as good as Zelda.

    -What games Infuriated you?

Ninja Gaiden! It was only my third videogame I played, and the level 6-2 drove me crazy; I couldn't finish it, didn't look at the game for months until Ninja Gaiden 2 was announced. I then tackled the game again, and could finish it in 29 minutes.

    - Do you remember the first time you saw the system in action? What game was it? What was your reaction?

I saw it the first time after I bought it, and after I discoverd that I could hop onto the upper bricks in SMB and actually ended up in a warpzone (?WHAT?) I was completely hooked.

    - Did you own the system "back in the day"?

I bought it in Oktober 1989. being just two weeks in the US. A couple of weeks before I read in an American newspaper in Germany an ironic column about parents standing in line for certain games for a system that took the US by storm; it was called the "Nintendo system." I wrote the name down, and thought I have to buy the thing, and I expected something like these Ataris I saw once in a while.

    -How about now?

I still have the original deck, controllers, NES advantage, box, and wrappings, and evrything works like a charm. In 1996 I bought a new NES Toploader for $25 at ToysRUS, which I never used. The box is in my closet like I bought it 8 years ago.

    - How many games do you have for it?

Mainly the games I bought for it back then, I'm not collecting. I picked a couple of games up two years ago. 52 boxed and complete NES games, immaculate like the nitpicker I am, and I finished them all.

    - Any stories surrounding the system that you can share with us?

When I opened the box with my NES system, there was an advertisement for a game mag in it, called "Nintendo Power." I smiled, and then I thought "yeah right, that's what I need, a game magazine." I subscribed to it two months later ("cheat codes? maps? great!), A complete collection of NP, around 600 videogame magazines, binders with cheatcodes and self-drawn maps of games, and 150 strategy guides later, I can only shake my head about my smile from 15 years ago.

I've been here for a while, and I can't believe I missed this thread.

    Anyway...

-What is your favorite game on this system?

Check my name. It is a pretty close tie with Tetris though.

    - What are some of your other favorites?

Mega Man 2, Tetris, Blaster Master, Dr. Mario, Life Force, Mr. Gimmick, and all of the SMB games. The list goes on and on.

    - What games surprised you? Infuriated you?

I was surprised how good Super Mario Bros. 3 looked back in the day. I simply hated Battletoads. I never really practiced so it always pissed me off.

    - Do you remember the first time you saw the system in action? What game was it? What was your reaction?

It was in 1990 at Christmas. My Cousin had the game, and it was Duck Hunt. I was instantly hooked.

    - Did you own the system "back in the day"? How about now?

Actually I never owned it when I was a kid. I bought a SNES before that, and a Gameboy. Now I own a toaster and a toploader

    - How many games do you have for it?

Just passed the 100 mark with 101 games.

    - What is your favorite game on this system?

it's really a tie between Zelda, SMB3, Startropics, Pirates, Turtles 2 and Battle of Olympus. All of these are well known and i loved them back then and still do

    - What are some of your other favorites?

well, see above, there's of course also the other Mario games, Mario&Yoshi, Nintendo World Cup (loved that one), Super Off Road, Mega Man series, Probotector, Robin Hood, Snake Rattle n Roll, RC Pro Am, Marble Madness, Chip n Dale, Duck Tales and many many more

    - What games surprised you? Infuriated you?

SMB3 with all those crazy suits

Do you remember the first time you saw the system in action? What game was it? What was your reaction?

a bit, yes, i was 5 or 6 back then and i played Super Mario Bros. 1 for a short while, from that moment on i wanted to have one, and i did get it (spend ALL my money on it)

Did you own the system "back in the day"? How about now?

    yes and yes

    - How many games do you have for it?

only about 40, it's really a shame, i've played much more but i don't own too many, i should start buying games for it again

    - Any stories surrounding the system that you can share with us?

i always wanted to have Zelda and never got it as a child because it was more expensive than any other NES game here and my dad thought that it's not worth the extra money

Well, I feel compelled to post on this somewhat old thread becuase I'm on a roll posting, I'm new and just getting my voice out there, and this thread kind of represents the reason I'm here in the first place.

    - What is your favorite game on this system?
God, what a hard question. SMB 1 is probably my all time favorite. That or Mario 3.

    - What are some of your other favorites?
Well, I've loved the Dragon Warriors from way back. FF, Mega Man series, LOTW... So many great games, so many memories...

    - What games surprised you? Infuriated you?
When I was younger, playing LOTW was ass hard. FF, too. For a 9 year old, those are freaking hard games. But on the other hand, my little sister tried playing through DW2 a while ago, and she seemed totally stuck, and I couldn't help her. But as a kid, I just breezed through that game...

Do you remember the first time you saw the system in action? What game was it? What was your reaction?

Yes, totally. One of my favorite memories! '88 or '89 at Sears. They had that promotional kiosk display with the cone buttons. I played SMB, and dude, that was it. You know, seeing the simple, bright display of an NES screen (particularly SMB 1) really kind of embodies video games for me. Much more pleasing to my eye than newer console games that, phew, just go insane.

Did you own the system "back in the day"? How about now?

Oh yeah, gamer from birth, even before! My parents like to tell me about when they would go to the arcade while my mom was pregnant. Then playing Kangaroo with me hanging in a kid-carrying-backpack thing. So they were always more than happy to support my gaming habits while growing up.

    - How many games do you have for it?

Now? About 275. But I've just recently started collecting again, after about a 2 year hiatus.

    - Any stories surrounding the system that you can share with us?

Hudson's Adventure Island, second stage. You know the big blue fish that jumps out of the water? Well, when I was about 9 or 10, a friend of mine and I thought it was just the damned funniest thing to scream "MINNOW!!!" at the top of our lungs whenever he jumped. His parents did not appreciate that at 2:00 in the morning. On that same note, when I was about 16, at a friends birthday party, we were playing the Japanese version of Bomberman 64, and when there was a draw, the Japanese text looked like it spelled "FO", so that was then the fun new word to shout, again at 2:00 in the morning. Now we just get drunk and are too loud anyway, but I'm just waiting for the next game to arouse such craziness.

You know, when I was younger, I always wondered why my parents, who loved games back in their day, never played with us very much. Now these days, I have a really hard time getting into new games, too. I guess after a while some of us just get set in our gaming ways...

To sum up, in case I didn't ramble on long enough, I freakin love the NES. I feel as happy as a clam just to own this stuff and sit there with it. When I start playing, forget about it! Soooooo great.

Sorry for coming in late on this one.

    - What is your favorite game on this system?
The Legend Of Zelda. I hadn't played a home system in about 4 years, and this game blew me away. I still love getting lost in it.

    - What are some of your other favorites?
I like the SMB series, Zelda 2, Contra, Monopoly(!), Rollerball. Most of the older arcade ports are pretty good, especially Galaga.

    - What games surprised you? Infuriated you?
I don't know about surprised, but The Legacy of the Wizard really pissed me off.

    - Do you remember the first time you saw the system in action? What game was it? What was your reaction?
I think the first time I really saw it was when my sister got it for Christmas, in 1987 I think. I had ignored it up till then, but when I played SMB, I was hooked.

    - Did you own the system "back in the day"? How about now?
Yes, and I still have my sister's system, along with the accessories she had.

    - How many games do you have for it?
Wow! 208. I haven't counted them in awhile!

    - Any stories surrounding the system that you can share with us?
I remember there was a mom and pop video store within walking distance of our house, and they had a ton of NES games to rent. I still remember watching my little sister play Friday the 13th and Bubble Bobble. Also, I remember a day soon after we got Zelda, Missy and I were taking turns playing it (she was always better at NES, and I was better at the 2600). It was a school night for her (I was in college, what a joke that was), and my dad got up at 2am for work and really lit into us because we were still playing!
I don't think they ever took the NES away from her like they took the 2600 away from me. Younger siblings always have it easier!

Zelda, SMB, series and Punch Out, Ninja Tutles !(long story)
    - What are some of your other favorites?
Almost everything that used the gun and way to many others to mention.
    - What games surprised you? Infuriated you?
I was surprized by Ninja Turtles me and my cuz had hours of fun playing it. I was infuriated by Ghostbusters we spent hours driving aroiund doing nothing, trying to figure out what to do.
    - Do you remember the first time you saw the system in action? What game was it? What was your reaction?
The first time i saw it in action i was amazed. It was around 90 at my cousins house. It is my oldest memory of seeing it and thinking it was the coolest thing ever. It was so much fun to play and it looked cool i was amazed.
    - Did you own the system "back in the day"? How about now?
I was born after its release never owned one until a earlyier this year. But my and my cousin would play his all the time even up to this day we break it out for some Yoshi or Duck Hunt. Whatever we happen to grab.
    - How many games do you have for it?
    - Any stories surrounding the system that you can share with us?
When me and my cousin played Ninja Turtles we would imitate the voices of everyone but everyones voice ended up being Shredder we found this to be the funniest thing ever. Especially when it was supposed to be Splinter or April talking. What do you expect we werent even in the 1st grade yet.

I might get a little tearry-eyed, here... I'll do my best.

    - What is your favorite game on this system? - It's a dead three-way tie for "Kid Icarus," "The Legend of Zelda," and "Baseball Stars."

    - What are some of your other favorites? - Gah. "River City Ransom," "Super Mario Bros. 2," "Super Mario Bros. 3," "Zelda 2: The Adventure of Link," "Metroid," "RC Pro-Am," "Arkanoid," "Mega Man 2," "Dr. Mario," "Tetris," "Power Blade," "Kings of the Beach," "Metal Gear..." Many others.

    - What games surprised you? - It still surprises me that the single greatest sports game ever released, "Baseball Stars," was released on an 8-Bit system. Such a great game.

    - What games infuriated you? - I got "X-Men" for Christmas one year. Needless to say, it ruined the holiday.

    - Do you remember the first time you saw the system in action? What game was it? What was your reaction? - I remember seeing "Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!!" at a friend's house. I was used to the Intellivision, so it blew me away. Totally "realistic" graphics.

    - Did you own the system "back in the day"? How about now? - I owned the system back in the day, indeed. I now own both a "toaster-loader" and a top-loader.

    - How many games do you have for it? - I'd rather not say. The collectors of the board will laugh. Hey. I'm new to the game.

    - Any stories surrounding the system that you can share with us? - It's silly, but the NES was a HUGE part of my life. Upon moving back to Houston this past February, I discovered that all of my memories of the city were NES-related. My parents and I were driving around on our first day back when the following exchange took place...

A Boy's Parents: "Don't your remember anything? We used to eat at that restaraunt over there all the time! You used to go to the dentist over there! You don't remember ANY of this?!"

A Boy: "Nope. Sorry. I can't remember anything."

    <silence>

A Boy: "Oh hey! That's the Toys R' Us where we bought "Arkanoid!"

    No lies. That actually happened.

I have plenty of other NES-related stories. The best one involves SMB2, a pair of footie pajamas, and an exploding garage door.

See if you can predict how THAT one goes.

    Best. Story. Ever.

    -A Boy

While I collect pretty much everything, my primary focus is the good old NES. I'm aiming for a complete library of licensed US releases first, with the unlicensed games to follow.

Three Favorite Games? I'd have to say Dr. Mario, Dragon Warrior, and Kid Icarus.

Other Favorites? Dragon Warrior series, Final Fantasy, Fire n' Ice, Megaman 2, Princess Tomato, Shadowgate, Wrecking Crew, Mike Tyson's Punchout.

What Games Surprised Me? Dragon Warrior 4. It amazes me that the best RPG of all time was on the NES. After 12 years of technological advancements, it still doesn't get any better that Dragon Warrior 4. Yes, even Final Fantasy VII pales in comparison.

First Time Seeing the NES? Probably when I received it as a present. I had received an Atari 2600 only two years before, so I totally wasn't expecting to get an NES for Xmas. My grandparents had recently died and we had moved to a new town and I guess my parents felt sorry for me. So they bought me the NES and like 20 games for Xmas. Yeah, they spoiled me that year.

How Many Games? At last count, 298. 20 of those are complete. I have probably 100 with either the box or in the instructions, but not both.

NES Stories? Hmmm...well, when I was little, I made my mom read me Nintendo Power as a bedtime story. She'd want to read Berenstein Bears and I'd say, "No, I want to learn how to beat Guts Man's stage." Good times.
Infuriating Games? I agree that X-Men was terribly infuriating, but I would say that the honor of most Infuriating Game goes to Super Glove Ball. A crappy game, designed for an even crappier peripheral. I got so pissed at my copy when I got it that I broke the TV adaptor for my Power Glove.

    - What is your favorite game on this system?

Probably Metroid. An innovative little game. Plus it's always a challenge.

    - What are some of your other favorites?

Super Mario Bros. 3, Bump and Jump (even though I don't physically have it ), Kuckile Cubicle or however it's spelled, Deja Vu, and Bomberman

    - What games surprised you? Infuriated you?

Pinball surprised me. It was quite wellmade.

For infuriated, probably SMB3, and Deja Vu. SMB3 for some very hard stuff (I hate the airships), and Deja Vu cause to this day I don't know how to get out of that starting place.

    - Do you remember the first time you saw the system in action? What game was it? What was your reaction?

Well, when I was born, we had a Nintendo. My earliest memory was actually me playing it. It was the orignal SMB, and I remember complaining to my mom that I couldn't get past 1-2.

    - Did you own the system "back in the day"? How about now?

My brother owned the system back then, but now I have a refurbished one. We have no clue where the first one is.

    - How many games do you have for it?

My brother's NES had 12...including Jaws, SMB 1 and 2, Duck Hunt, and Mega Man 3 (which was later turned into PunchOut somehow).

Now, I have 21 games, but I still want some of our older games (ie SMB 2, SMB + Ducx Hunt, Jaws and Mega Man 3 mostly).

    - Any stories surrounding the system that you can share with us?

I was tinkering with my NES one day, just for fun, and I decided to not screw in the bottom of the system. Now, my games are working better.

I remember watching my brother get his butt whipped by the Rock monster in MM3. Fun times, fun times.

I would first off like to say this has to be the most dear to my heart topic I have ever done so far here on DP. This is because the NES, like many others, is what got me started on videogames. This is were alot of my childhood memories are. Anyways, here it goes:

-What is your favorite game on this system?
By far, Super Mario Brothers 3. I remember the day I got it, twas at Wal-Mart. This game is also on my top 3 games of all time list.

    - What are some of your other favorites?
Well, of course I love alot of games but the ones that really stick out as KICK ASS games to me are-
    Zelda
    CONTRA
    Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 1
    Super Mario Bros
    Super Mario Bros 2
    Mike Tysons's Punch-Out
    JAWS

    - What games surprised you? Infuriated you?
Well, the only game that I really was mad at was Zelda. It was just so hard to me for some reason. BUT, my best friend could beat the game NO PROBLEM at all, I didn't get it? Still LOVED the game though!

    - Do you remember the first time you saw the system in action? What game was it? What was your reaction?
My very first game was either SMB or Kung-Fu. I got the system with kung-fu for like my 6 or 7th birthday. I guess I was pretty little then and didn't realize the power I had in my hands. (Meaning, I actually owned an NES!)

    - Did you own the system "back in the day"? How about now?
As told above, I got the system in like '87 and of course own it now.

    - How many games do you have for it?
Well, if I had kept all my games throughout the years I would have like 250+. But not up until about 2 years ago, that's when I REALLY started collecting and not getting rid of any games. It's sort of pathetic, being this is my FAV. system, but only have about 60 games. That total will be in the at least 400's someday, I PROMISE!!

    - Any stories surrounding the system that you can share with us?
Pretty much just all the memories I had as a child. I was really little then.
