Default Final Fantasy 1+2: Dawn of Souls

This came out today. I just got back with the game and messed around with it for about 20 minutes.

Being the Final Fantasy nut that I am, I HAD to buy this. I don't know much about this, only that it's susposed to be a ehanced version of the PlayStation game Final Fantasy Orgins, which in turn were enhanced versions of the WonderSwan remakes of those two Famicom games.

On my first, although very brief, look at the gameplay, I don't see much new. The graphics are a touch better as opposed to FFO, and the music is the same but also a touch better. Some minor changes in the text and the display options. Three saves for each game. A Beastiary is viewable for each game. FF 2 has charcter portraits added now with the major charcters in the game, next to the text.

The back of the box mentions that FF 2 had a added feature called the Soul of Rebirth but it does'nt explain what it is or what happens with it.

I DID notice one new thing while checking out FF 1. While walking from Corneria Castle to the Temple of Fiends, I noticed a cave on my way up there. "Hey, that was'nt there before" I said to myself and veered off to enter it. It's a Shrine, and a guy inside says that access to the shrine has been closed since the Earth started decaying. I imagine you can go back there after you beat Lich, the Earth Fiend.

Did anyone else buy this today and has put in more game time then I have? Anyone know what the added stuff in both games were?

Right NOW, I can only suggest buying this if you:
    1) Are a huge FF fan like I am
    2) Do not have FFO
    3) Want FF fun on the go

Perhaps if I find out or learn -- maybe from this thread? -- that there is a LOT of added stuff to warrent paying $30 for it if you allready have FFO, I can suggest it for everyone.

I got FFO months ago when bestbuy.com had it for $4.99, but I avoided playing it because of this. I will be getting this for some upcoming holiday. and can't wait!

Have you been able to check out any of the supposed new dungeon with past enemies in it?
    Egbert, I miss you...

See, like I said, I don't know ANYTHING about this new version or what's susposed to be new. I mentioned what little I did in my orginal post. And, well, since I just beat these two games a year ago on FFO, I'm not sure I'm going to play through them again anytime soon.....

FF1 has new dungeons featuring unique bosses from the other FFs.\
FF2 has a new story section and presumably new dungeons, too. I believe you access this after beating the main game.

Also, both games have revamped battle systems (this is more noticable in 2) to make them less of a pain in the ass. :P

How so the battle systems? I tried battles in both games and don't see anything different about them.

Which bosses can you face off in FF 1 now? I assume the Shrine I saw has something to do with them?

So that Soul of Rebirth thing mentioned on the box is a new story included with FF2? In addition to the regular game story?

Damn, I may have to play through them again after all. Crap. :P

I imported FF1.2 a couple months ago. The furthest I've gotten is on FF1 after beating the underground cave and getting the crown.

I got some questions about it since my knowledge of Japanese is only some katakana so all I've been able to detect were magic spells. What is that new cave between Corneria and the Temple of Fiends that has an old man and a monster which happens to look like Lich?

That's the same cave I found, as mentioned in my first note. I don't know much about it.

I missed a FAQ ont he Japanese version of this on GameFAQ's. Normaly I hate to look at these so early, but I took a look for changes and found this:

-Soul of Chaos (see two sections below)

-Improved, more detailed storyline (I don't understand Japanese that well...)

-The bosses here are now a bit more powerful, espeically Chaos

-50 new enemies plus several more bosses in Soul of Chaos

-A few items in chests has been changed to make the game harder

-Training is now much, much easier. I reached LVL 5 AND beat Garland within
15 MINUTES... That feat couldn't be done in the NES nor the PSX version
    under normal speed!

-Magic system is re-vamped, no long does a magic spell take up only 1 MP.
Now it is like the newer Final Fantasies, where the weaker spells are worth
less than the stronger ones. No LVL 1 or LVL 8 spells either (but it does
    still apply in stores).

-Able to save outside without the need of Sleeping Bags/Tent/Cottage now.

-Thief is much, much more stronger now.

In this edition of Final Fantasy 1+2, there is a new mode in Final Fantasy I,
as well as in FF2, that allows you to fight famous bosses of old after you
beat the game. In order to access the mode, you have to defeat the four fiends first then go back to the places where you fought the fiends. The statues of the fiends will have been shattered, revealing a hidden portal beneath. Go through it and have fun! The bosses here are very difficult, especially the famous Shinryu and Omega from FF5! Good luck!

No mention of what the bosses ARE.......

I also found this about that cave both of us are wondering about:

There is a cave on the left side, in the mountains, that is exclusive to
this version. Inside that place, you will find a rotting body... This is
actually irrelevant as of now, so let's forget this for now.

More on Soul of Chaos here:

    --Soul of Chaos

After defeating all four Fiends, go back to their old positions (where you
fought them) and enter through the shattered statues and step into the portal.
You will be taken into a new mode of game, Soul of Chaos. Each portal has
its own dungeon from a different Final Fantasy Game, for example, FF6 or FF5.
There is some cameo appearances such as Giglamesh (ff5), Omega (ff5), and
Ultros (ff6). Beware! They are very strong and difficult!

Soul of Chaos is a new mode made exclusively for the Final Fantasy I+II
edition of Final Fantasy I. This mode allows you to battle far more superior
monsters and bosses of the old (from FF4, FF5, FF6) in various grueling
dungeons. There are four of them here...

Ah, here we are.....here are the bosses you can fight:
SE room: ECHIDNA (4800 HP, drops X-Potion)

SW room: CEREBRUS (4000 HP, drops Small Steel)

NE room: AHRIMAN (5000 HP, drops Ether Dry)

NW room: 2-HEADED DRAGON (4500 HP, drops Poet's Clothes

You can fight either or both of the following bosses in B5F:

North Room: SCARMIGLION (4000 HP then 7046 HP, drops Moon Curtain)

South Room: CAGNAZZO (7068 HP, drops Light Curtain)

    -------

You can fight either or both of the following bosses in B10F:

Lower Path: VALCALICIA (12954 HP, drops Bribe Heart)

Upper Path: RUBICANTE (15000 HP, drops Kikuichimonji)

You will fight this boss in B5F:

Giglamesh (8888 HP, drops Genji Glove)

    -------

You will fight this boss in B10F:

Atomos (13000 HP, drops Judgement Staff)

    -------

You can fight either or both of the following bosses in B20F:

NW room: Omega (35000 HP, drops Murasame)

NE room: Shinryu (35000 HP, drops Ragnarok)

You will fight this boss in B10F:

CHUPON (10000 HP, drops Genji Helm)

    -------

You will fight this boss in B20F:

ULTROS (17000 HP, drops Rune Staff)

    -------

You will fight this boss in B30F:

DOOM TRAIN (9999 HP, drops Last Elixir)

    -------

You will fight this boss in B40F:

DEATH GAZE (30000 HP, drops Light Bringer)

Bah......it sounds nice, but only THREE FF games? Would have liked to have seen some from the NES and PSX ones here as well. Oh well.

I'm at the point where I found the crown to give to that elf prince guy whatever his name is. My characters are about level 15.

Some things are coming back to me... I used to love this game, but seeing as the last time I played it in depth was probably like 12 or 14 years ago it's a little foggy...

You get your wish. Echidna, Cerberus, Ahriman, and 2 headed Dragon are the 4 guardians of the Dark Crystals uin Final Fantasy 3 for NES/Famicom. That makes it 4 FF games.

I'm definitely getting it, as I love Final Fantasy and playing it on the go is a great thing, IMO. Of course, I do own FFO, but it doesn't matter (says this owner of several Pac-Man, Ms. Pac-Man and Defender games).

I played the translated ROM of FF3 back in 1998.

And it's susposed to be out at the DS for some point.....

The graphics and music are a little better then FFO, it does seem like you level up faster, and I like how the magic sysem is better designed. Just that I played these games so recently......well, maybe when I'm in the car for Christmas time.

Besides, we're not going to get another FF game until FF XII comes out at some point next year.....

Aahhh. Now I remember FF1. Walk around doing obvious "tasks", (find item in a far away place, then give/use item where characters prompted you). And in between walking to your destination, get hit with 200+ monsters x_x

I loved it back in the day, but lemme tell ya, I sat on the can and could read a magazine while simultaneously playing this game!

walk... battle. Hit single button a couple of times while reading magazine. Hear victory music, continue walking.. battle. Hit single button a couple of times while reading magazine . I swear to god the I spend about 5 seconds walking and 40+ seconds per battle. :P

    Lucky bastard. :P

Anyone feel that the PSX and GBA of FF1 is easier then we remember the orginial NES to be?

It's only easier because of some changes they made to the game to better fit into modern RPG's -- a fast walking mode, the ability to hit another enemy if the targeted one is allready defeated, a more smoother battle system, and the ability to save anywhere, including in the middle of a dungeon.

If that FAQ is correct, bosses are susposed to be HARDER in this new GBA version then in any of the previous ones.

I think so, I whipped through the PSX version with NONE of the problems I remember (levelling up on ogres to get silver armor didn't happen this time) and it only took me 2-3 tries to get to and beat the dark elf.

Yeah, that happened to me too, I was fighting the Fiends and beating them quicker then I remembered from the NES counterpart.

I still iffy on playing FF2 cause of the battle system though.
