    Default Monday MAME Club [12/06/04] - Vendetta

    Welcome to this week's Monday Morning MAME Club Posting. Every Monday, a member of the MAME club will pick a new game for you to play in MAME! All you have to do to participate is install MAME, download the ROM of the week from this message, and then post your thoughts about the game! You can post a full review of the game or simply tell us what you liked/didn't like about the game. Have you played this game before? Have you played it in an actual arcade? Do you like the genre? How did it run on your computer? Did you beat it? If so, how long did it take? What was your high score? How far can you get? Did you have any problems emulating the game? When writing your review, post it right here in the sticky topic and include any thoughts you have about the game. Remember, YOU are the reviewer. Let us know anything and everything you think about the game! Just remember, if you want people to respond during YOUR week, you should play along on OTHER weeks!

    The ROM of the week is: Vendetta (available HERE!)

    Wow, 2 straight weeks with beat-em-ups! Yes!

    This is one of the best, period. The music is great, graphics solid, the hit detection is spot on. Really can't ask for much more than that. I think this is better then the sequel, Violent Storm. Just plays better. Oh, and it's certainly better than the almost impossible prequel, Crime Fighters.

    Definitely a great one - the boss fights are insane, but all the same you feel you should know what to do :)

    The final gauntlet is even more insane than the regular boss fights!

    The yell enemies let out when they catch on fire is one I heard earlier today in a totally different game (Apocalypse, on the PlayStation); the little yell the leather girls let out when knocked back is also part of the sound clip played when you defeat a vampire maid in N64 Castlevania...speaking of Castlevania, do the Rude Brothers remind you of anybody? They should!

    Great music here, and a great amount of detail in the level - there's never a dull moment here or one in which it looks like the designers wanted more ROM space :) Amazing that they did it all on a custom CPU at only 3 MHz. The bad points? Sometimes things fly the wrong direction when thrown, and many times my character just didn't want to turn around. Outside of that, though, I don't see anything to complain about...not even the "revenge is SWEET!" sound clip played five too many times (per battle). Other places the boss tricks would easily be called cheap, and that it is, but here again you really feel and know that skill will let you beat anything thrown at you.

    Hmmmmmmmmm... could it be... FRANKENSTEIN AND IGOR??!?

    THIS is a great game. Wish I had a chance to play it more when I saw this cabinet in my local arcade! That was ages ago, sadly. However, MAME serves its purpose well, and I have rediscovered the greatness of Vendetta, which is actually part two of the Crime Fighters trilogy. The main characters all resemble someone, and the trivia bits of MAME tell us whom:

    Blood=Mike Tyson
    Hawk=Hulk Hogan
    Boomer=Jean Claude Van Damme
    Sledge=Mr. T

    Heh, ain't that something? I love it when you knee an enemy in the groin, you hear a CLANK sound, and they reel back holding their nads in pain. Great stuff, great stuff. Konami always has awesome takes on beat-em-ups, and if ya get tired of Final Fight, turn to Vendetta for something new.
    That's it! Next stop: The Junkyard. Population: You!

    Some newbie questions:

    What do you have to change in MAME's settings to be able to select your character? I tracked down a 2P version of the rom that lets me do it automatically.

    Is there any way to jump in the game? I'm guessing no, but I just want to make sure I don't have to tweak any settings.

    I'll chime in with my thoughts later, but any game that allows you to play as "Hulk Hogan," "Mr. T," "Jean Claude Van Damme," etc. sounds like it's gonna rule.

    Thanks.

    Wow, I'd never played this one, but glad I have now. The game was great! At no point did I get bored, or have to make myself keep playing. Actually, when I beat Faust, I was upset that I had won. Though the bonus kept me happy. The levels were a bit short, and the boss fights were fairly easy as long as it was one on one. Just stay at their feet once you knock them down and they'll almost never get a hit in. The Linda's or whatever they named their whip ladies were harder than most boss fights.. and the kung fu guys were some of the hardest things in the game. Overall a damn good beat em' up. I'll have to check out the sequel now. Thanks for picking this one.. I may have never played it otherwise.

    hahaha it was my turn and I'm not first to post.

    Dogs and what seem to be homesexual biker dudes WILL dry hump you to cause you harm. it's a pretty straight forward beatem' up from konami.

    on a side note on an old machine I actually did create animated gifs of the humping dogs and bikers...sadly I couldn't find them in time for this feature and too many things have been going on for me to re-create them

    interesting note linda is supposedly The late Miss Elizabeth of wrestling fame.

    Anyways Jean Claude Van Damme has many links to arcade games here's some of them...

    karate champ (featured in bloodsport)
    vendetta (albeit unintentionally)
    and of course who can forget...

    Street Fighter the Movie!

    and to answer dabargainhunta's question jumping isn't possible in this game.

    This is just the 4 player ROM version...I'm assuming it comes straight off a cab with four joysticks, so the idea would be whoever got to the Hulk first gets to play as him :)

    The ROM to let you do that should be much smaller - this ROM is simply the base version.

    You can always make a mess of MAME changing key configs (MAME really really needs to set up a system where you can simply swap controllers with a short button combo), but the defaults will let you play the other characters with the keyboard. The keys will be in funny places though - QWE region for 2p, YUIO region for 3p, something like that. Changing key configs really is too much trouble to be worth the while.

    One of the really nice things about a group like this is that it allows you to discover hidden gems like Vendetta. I am completely in love with this game. This has to be one of the finest and most criminally underrated beat-'em-ups I've ever played (I had never even HEARD of it before now).

    The graphics are fantastic. The locales are overflowing with rich details, and the levels seem to get better as you progress. Two of my favorite areas are the convenience store and the casino.

    There are so many cool little things in this game:

    - Weapons fall out of items like garbage cans and boxes (which double as weapons themselves), which I think is a nice touch.

    - I love that that each character has at least one unique move in his arsenal (i.e. Hulk Hogan can do elbowdrops on the baddies when they're down).

    - In one area, you can throws guys into glass windows, and the glass will actually break.

    I could go on and on. There's so much here that I'm sure I've forgotten half of it already.

    As youruglyclone stated, you can't jump, but I've discovered that you can do jumpkicks or flying leaps (depending on the character) by pressing both A and B together.

    Also, I personally don't think Linda really resembles the late Miss Elizabeth (as your uglyclone stated), but the second boss sure does look like the late Bruiser Brody (also of pro wrestling fame).

    GREAT game! Thanks, youruglyclone and Flack.

    I used to play this one a little bit at the Chinese Resturant by my house, not a bad beat-em-up at all, for whatever reason, it played like absolute hell on MAME for me.... stuttering/ messy

    Sorry, thought I posted about this one last week...

    Me an beat 'em ups don't get along. I think I made it to the first boss. That's as far as I got in this one. Nice visuals and everything, but it just didn't agree with me.
