Will the PSP have regional lockouts?
My brother goes to Japan occasionally, and I could have him get me one of these, but if I can't play U.S. games on it, then it might not be the best idea.

I want one too! But I have the same worries. I would like to confirm the rumors I heard that it has no lockout. Also, I wonder if the imports will allow you to play them in English mode as I head that when you start up the system, it allows you a choice of languages.
And then, how can I get one near Jap retail and not get gauged. I'll only pick one up if it's not exorbitantly overpriced.
'All your PSP are belong to us!'
I don't have the link but Sony has explicitly stated that the PSP is region-free for games, region-specific for UMD movies/etc. And as that play-asia preview shows, the system O.S. is configurable to English among many other languages. Seems like a pretty safe import unless you're dying to watch those UMD movies.
I wouldn't trust it. I was told many things about the Dreamcast before it's US launch. One was that there would not be any lockouts. Another was that the Asian version (one without the modem) would not have any lockout. Well, I ended up importing the Asia version of the DC and was pretty happy when I saw you can adjust the language to English. Why wouldn't it play US games when they are released I thought? Well, a few months later the US release was near, and Hollywood Video was renting the system a few days before it's release. I rented Sonic Adventure right away to test it, and it didn't work. Lucky for me a boot loader from a little group named Utopia was released and I was able to play USA games on the system.
I would say wait. You will most likely pay more to import, and if US games don't work on it you will be pissed, not to mention you will have a hell of a time trying to sell it off after it's released here.
When in doubt, keep your money in your wallet/bank account/shoebox until you know for sure.
I watched an interview with the PSP designer (frogot his name ) just yesterday funnily enough. He stated quite strongly that the games would NOT be region specific as it was a portable device and should be played anywhere. He also stated that the UMD movie disc side of things would not be region specific for the same reason. He said that the UMD discs are not to be seen as competition for DVD. Sony will not be releasing a back catalogue of old movies etc but new content (we'll see!) to compliment the PSP.
lucky you, I preordered mine from www.lik-sang.com, apparantly they are saying that their order has been delayed!Originally Posted by Anthony1
