Default what was the first game to offer 4 player split screen?

Ok, I'm talking about the first game on a home console that allowed you to play a multiplayer game with the screen divided up into four little boxes, so that four people could play at one time.

The first one that I remember is Goldeneye for the N64, but I'm sure that there must have been other games that did this prior to that.

So the Nintendo 64 was the first system to have a 4 player game that split the screen into 4's ?

I guess it makes sense, because it has 4 controller ports.

I think there's a racing game on the Saturn that has 4-player split-screen, but I can't remember the name or when it was released... it may have predated the above mentioned games, though.

I could've sworn there was a SNES or Genesis racing game that allowed four players, with the screen split up into horizontal stripes, but I can't remember the name...

That is a good list of all the games that use the multitap for the snes. I think Top Gear 3000 for the SNES was the first to allow 4 players to play by splitting the screen for everyone. I could be wrong and would love to know which was the first to do this.

    you are right
and second one was "Street Racer"(a bad mario.kart clone) which also offered 4 player split screen(snes/i don't know if the genesis ver also offered 4 player mode)
    there was also a saturn/playstation version with 8(!!)player split-screen
    unplayable though... x_x
