Default 1st Generation Sega CD Problem and Sega CD protection.

Would anyone know why a Sega CD (1st Gen) tray would just open and close at random. never loading the disc even though the accsess light flashs? no matter what kind of game I put in? I get the Bios screen (the screen you would normally see) I have all the correct Adapters and such. anyone know whats wrong?

Also are Sega CD's protected at all? Can I just go ahead and make my own backups or do I need to mod it in some way?

any help would be very helpful and you would get many thanks from me

No need for mods just burn them (probibly at the slowest speed possible to ensure the easiest readability burn possible)

True, but make sure the game is encoded for the US region. A US Sega CD won't play Japanese or European Mega CD games and vice versa. There's a utility out there that will let you change the region of an iso, so use that before you burn the game. Some games won't work with that program, though, so your only option is to install a multibios to let it work in multiple regions.

Usually.. when the Sega CD unit just flashes and spit discs back out (also BIOs comes up but you can't play a disc of ANY kind) it's a sign that the switch which senses the CD tray is closed; is broken in some way. I'm the proud owner of 2 broken front loaders and one exhibits this behavior. I went out and bought an X'eye and it did the same thing (flashing light, etc.).. someone told me it was the same kind of switch, and sure enough I fixed it. I'm gonna' open my Sega CD Model 1 that acts the same way someday and fix it as well.. i'm just too lazy now.
