I can tell you offhand that you might need to know whether you have a model 1 or 2. I know that model 1 chips are not easy to come by, but model 2 chips can be found pretty easily

if you have a model 1, FORGET ABOUT MODDING IT. just forget it. now. turn around, walk away slowly.
If you have a model 2, it's do-able. Though, you may as well go emulate then
