Default Super Metroid vs. SMB vs. SotN vs. Zelda Link to the Past

These four games are often proclaimed as modern 2D masterpieces. How would you rank these games personally, and which one is your top fave and why?

Super Metroid, Super Mario Brothers, Castlevania Symphony of the Night and Zelda: A Link to the Past.

4 very different and cross generation games, but...

    1. Symphony of the Night
    2. Link to the Past
    3. Super Metroid
    4. Super Mario Brothers

Now, if you had said Super Mario Brothers 3, or done it by Castlevania games/Zelda games/Metroid games/SMB games, there would have been different results.

Super Metroid (as I've said here several times, it's my favorite game of all-time), followed by LTTP, then SMB. I haven't played SOTN yet, although I'd like to own a copy of it someday.

Super Metroid, Symphony of the Night, Super Mario Bros., Link to the Past.

Honestly, I've never played Link to the Past, played SOTN for the first time two months ago, and finished Super Metroid for the first time less than a year ago. This is unfair against people who never had a Playstation or an SNES until they started collecting!

SOTN all the way. One of my favorite console games of all time and I have been gaming since the Pong days.

    Zelda.
I never played much of SotN but I was never a huge Castlevania fan to begin with.

    Ditto!
    I love Super Metroid.
SOTN is great, but it bugged me that it borrowed too much from Metroid at the time and I missed the whip.
SMB is a classic (and the only game in the list I've never beaten )
and while I like LTTP, I prefer the orginal Zelda and Ocarina of Time. I think it has to do with too much "hand holding" in the game in term s where to go next...

    Cheers

    wow, tough

I'm gonna have to say I like Super Metroid a bit better than SOTN, even tho I like the castlevania series better than metroid. I still haven't ever beaten LttP (got up to last dungeon and quit playing for some reason)

    1. Super Metroid
    2. SMB
    3. SOTN
    4. LttP

SMB is just too classic and too fun to be put at #4 imo, although it doesn't hold a candle up in terms of depth in gameplay to the others.

    My order:

    1. SOTN
    2. Zelda
    3. Super Metroid
    4. SMB

SOTN, Super Metroid, Zelda: LTTP, SMB

SOTN I think has the most depth and best gameplay. The music and graphics are also quite impressive. Metroid is good for the same reasons as SOTN, but I think SOTN just does everything better. Zelda is always good for fun adventure/RPG action and I'm not a huge SMB fan so I put that last.

I'm honestly surprised at so many people saying Symphony of The Night is the best of the four, I expected far more support for Zelda and Metroid. With that said, I would put them in this order:

The Legend of Zelda: A Link To The Past
    Castlevania: Symphony of The Night
    Super Metroid
    Super Mario Brothers

Link To The Past is, in my opinion, the best game ever made, and when I last tried to compile a list of my favorites SOTN was third. With those two already chosen, the other two were easy. As great as Mario Brothers is, it's still a very early platformer that I simply couldn't choose over a game as deep as Metroid.

    1. LttP
    2. SotN
    3. SMB
    4. Super Metroid

SotN gets mad props for the graphics, and it is definitely classic - but the formula isn't quite as genius-level as Zelda 3.

#s 3 and 4 are just OK IMO.

How is SMB a "modern" game?? I mean unless there were games back in the 1800's that I don't know about.
