Default analog buttons - are they doing anything for ya?

i remember the big hype about analog buttons and the PS2 controller, i guess pretty much every button on every modern console controller is analog now. i cant see what all the fuss is about, i mean yeah when the trigger is the gas pedal it works cool but aside from that. maybe i'm just not playing the right games but i never notice the non-trigger buttons being used in an pressure sensitive fashion. i'm not knocking innovation but i just dont see it being used.

Try Mad Maestro. It uses the analog face buttons, and it's kind of cute.

Try playing Metal Gear Solid 2 or 3 for the ps2 or xbox if you want to see the analog buttons used for something good.

In snake eater they're used to their fullest, except that the ps2 doesn't have enough range for a person to easily adjust preasure. I often find my self sliting throats when i just want to hold someone.

Don't try this with twins snakes, because the GC only has analog shoulder buttons.

The only good use that I've seen from it so far is that goofy hopping mini-game in DOA:XBV. That's rather addictive from just the use of one button, too.

I use my favorite blue Dual Shock1 with my PS2 and it works just fine. None of my friends can tell any difference between the DS1 or 2.
To be honest the whole pressure sensative thing has never really been put to any good use in my opinion.

Analog Shoulder Buttons are great... Xbox and Especially GameCube's with their digital click. Can't stand PlayStation's shoulder buttons anymore.

But Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes on GameCube is so much easier to play simply because GameCube lacks the Analog Face Buttons which were used most awfully for lowering your weapon in 2 and Substance.

Aside for the aforementioned MGS2, Ace Combat 4 & 5 used the analogue buttons for the zoom function of the map.

The only thing I think of when I hear analog face buttons in a sore thumb and wrist because all of the driving games require you to hard press to achieve maximum speed.

    PS2...

Driving in an Xbox game is great. Most of them are using the Analog Shoulder buttons, so you get a much greater range of sensitivity even if the game itself only recognizes 2 or 3 of them. Allows you to move your fingers a bit without having to worry about slowing down / speeding up.

Doesn't GT3 use the analog buttons for throttle and brake inputs?

The analog shoulder buttons combined with the "click" on the GC controllers were brilliant. I love how they're used.

Yup and after an hour of playing, your thumbs will get blisters from all the button jaming youll have to do.

I just stick with a normal dual shock, IMO it has better response times and doesn't require jamming to get the full affect.

I was playing a little Ridge Racer Type 4 yesterday with my newly acquired Negcon and I noticed that the analog face buttons weren't exactly working in an analog capacity.

Would anybody have a list of Negcon-compatible games? I've been searching on this site, the Namco site, Google, GameFAQs...haven't found anything exactly definitive.

All they do is hurt my fingers. My right hand is somewhat crippled, and pressing an analog button for any length of time really starts to pain me. I think analog shoulder buttons, along with two analog sticks, is enough.

    Default analog vs digital

Remember the good old days of the twin potentiometer joysticks that had no self center functions. Like the atari 5200 or even early apple computers.

The first digital joysticks were a milestone in the gaming world.

Now we are back where we started

I never used the Negcon, had a Jogcon though, and while it wore your fingers out in long sessions, it was still cool.

I mainly use my Driving Force Pro wheel for GT3 now, just an infinitely better game w/ it.

Ugh, man I hated them in the Metal Gear Solid series. Having to release pressure to drag someone in snake eater was annoying I could never do it. I accidentally slit a few throats too when holding too hard. Same thing happened with not firing my gun in mgs2. In most racers on the ps2 I just hate them....I can't stand not having a trigger for the gas. Instead you just have to SMASH to accelerate slightly faster. Annoying.

    Ummm, not really?

I do like the PS2 analog controller for games like GTA/MGS/ect though. But in alot of cases I don't see the difference. Still nice to have though.
