    Default Sega CD Setup help

    Hi there!

I bought my sega CD cheap from somebody who didn't really know much about it, hopefully somebody here can help me set it up...

I have the model that has a "base" that goes under the Genesis (I think it's a model 2)

    It's this:

    Few questions

    1) Do you need to hook up both spots for a power cord to an outlet? Just the base? Just the Genesis?

    2) Do you need to hook up both the A/V out on the Genesis and the R/L audio channels on the base?

    3) What is the little hole in between the R/L audio channels and the AC adapter hole on the base?

    4) How do you get it to play off the CD instead of the Genesis?

    Thanks![/img]

    1) both the Gen and Sega Cd need power.

    2) I just use the gen av cables.

3)? It says mixing so maybe mono sound?

    4) Take the gen cart out.

Yes.. and you need a 3rd if you have the 32x.

    2) Do you need to hook up both the A/V out on the Genesis and the R/L audio channels on the base?
    Not with the Genesis 2.

    3) What is the little hole in between the R/L audio channels and the AC adapter hole on the base?
Postman's peephole..? I don't have one in front of me so, I dunno...

    4) How do you get it to play off the CD instead of the Genesis?
When you turn it all on, it seeks for a CD. If there is one in the drive, it will give you an option screen.

    1) Yep. Each unit needs to be supplied with power
Sega CD 2 power supply. MK-1602 (Model 1 genny also)
    Genesis 2 power supply. MK-2103
    32X power supply. MK-2103

    2) Sound output is through the Genesis but the extra output of the Sega CD will give you stereo for both. You could run these through stereo for example.

    3) The hole = the Mixing input. I believe its used with the model 1 Genesis. From Sega CD FAQ "an audio cable is used from the headphone
output of the Genesis to the "Mixing" input of the Sega CD"

    4) It will default boot to the Sega CD as long as you don't have a cartridge in the Genesis or 32X

Do you have a 32x? if so, You need a cable to go from the genesis to the 32x for it to work.

Yeah I do have a 32X as well, I don't really use it.... if I did, it fits fine in the Model 2 Genny? (I also have a model 1 sitting around)

That's a relief that the SCD power cord is the same as the Model 1 Genny... now I need to see if I can find an AV or RF cord that fits the Model 2 Genny... lol...

    Thanks!

    Hmmm something's not working

I have both power supplies connected (I know the Genesis one for sure is working because I see the red light. Not sure if the SCD is working, but the Genny by itself isn't working right either)

I have an RF connected from the Genesis to the TV.

I've tried both channels, tried switching the TV's input source from antenna to cable.

When I turn the power on, the static increases, so there is some sort of signal causing some interference.

How many pins are supposed to be in the RF attached to the Genesis? THere's a lot of holes, but I only see two pins.

I did see it demoed and working, so I'm at a loss

Is the red light comin up on the Sega CD?

if not youll most likely have to replace the fuse! and that is the only problem (a common one too!)

No, I don't see a red light on the sega cd =(

And if I take the genesis off, shouldn't it work by itself? Or does that port on the right side that hooks into the base need to be fitted with something?

And how do I get that fuse?

Not sure if this helps or not but here's a picture of my cord setup minus the powers supplies.

    Image link

The Genny AV out to the 32X AV in and the 32X AV out to the TV with a power supply on each.

Have you tried cleaning the Contactacts on the genesis? And have you tried the CD with both of your Genesis systems?

And, the Sega CD will not work if you don't have a Genesis attached. (No power switch unless you mod it) To the best of my knowledge, Nobody has Modded a Sega CD to not require a Genesis to play..

Dumb question, but you can't attach a model 1 Genesis to that Sega CD, can you?

And damn I stopped at work to do a few trades but I forgot to grab the other AV cable

You can but you need an adapter that was shipped with the Sega CD...

You can use a model 1 gen with a model 2 SCD.

Yes you can attach a model 1 genny to a model 2 SCD. There's even an extension you can buy so it won't look all wonky hanging over the side of the SCD.

I don't have this combination of hardwares so I don't know what it requires to setup. =\

Just test the genesis by itself and see if that is the problem. If its not, then the Sega CD is the problem. You might need a fuse if its the CD system.

Ok I found a good RF cord

I can get the Genesis to work fine, but I'm either doing something wrong with the Sega CD or it's just not working.

It looks like there should be a little red (?) light where it says "Access" on the Sega CD, but it doesn't turn on. I tried switching power cords, nothing different. I tried starting the power on the Genesis with and without a game inside and I never see anything for the Sega CD.

Any thoughts? Anybody do repairs on Sega CD here?

    Default It's the fuse

More than likely it's going to be the Sega CD's internal fuse...

    http://www.mrvfone.com.au/sega/fuse.htm

I've done the repair on a Model 2, and it's pretty straightforward. Unless you have no experience soldering at all, it'd be perfectly reasonable to do the repair yourself.

The last time I soldered I was probably 8. But I think I could do it...

Do you need to order the fuse specially?

Pop in a 850mA fuse (AU PAL Mega CD 2) Will be higher around 1-1.5 A for the MD 2 or SMS 2. (don't exceed 2A).

Or can you buy one somewhere? (Radio shack?) Other places?

Since it's broken won't hurt to tinker with it.

And a suggestion on exactly what amperage?
