Default What's the best way to die in gaming history?

After spending a few recent minutes revelling in being killed by the chainsaw guy in RE4, I got to thinking...what is the single greatest death scene/way to die in gaming history? I feel as though the chainsaw guy is hard to beat (death-wise), but I'm be curious to see what others here think.

The metal slug games all have some neat death scenes. If for nothing more then the kick ass animation in theme.

Two stick out in my head just because I remember my friends reactions at the time. The girl audibly gasped and the guy said 'Whoa!' Both deaths are from the same game : Phantasmagoria.

If you screwed up at the end of the game, you ended up either getting your head split in half by a swinging blade or pulled apart by a demon. I'll see if I can find some animated gifs. Not for the faint of heart.

I've always wanted to play Phantasmagoria. Does that play on recent OS, or just older ones?

That would be sweet. I never beat that, so it'd be good to see what I "missed out on".

I don't know about "best," but most memorable for me was the slot machine from the "cantina" in Space Quest I.

    My favorite:

Your serious allergic reaction to protein loss from matter transference beams becomes a cause celebre among various holistic pressure groups in the Galaxy and leads to a total ban on dematerialisation. Within fifty years, space travel is replaced by a keen interest in old furniture restoration and market gardening. In this new quieter Galaxy, the art of telepathy flourishes as never before, creating a new universal harmony which brings all life together, converts all matter into thought and brings about the rebirth of the entire Universe on a higher and better plane of existence. However, none of this affects you, because you are dead.

My favorite was from either Space Quest 1 or 2, not sure which. But it had Roger Wilco go into a bathroom where there was a LOT of flatulence going on. Just for fun, I clicked on the lighter and...

    BOOM!!!

In that same vein, in N64 Conker the great talking POO would kill you with his excrement if you didn't throw him enough corn. Great hi-brow game.

Peasant's Quest, by the homestar runner guys, has some pretty amusing death scenes -

    type "die" and you die

Walk to close to kerrek and you die

Jhonka asks if you stole his riches. If you say yes, he kills you. If you say no he says "oh, okay"

Trogdor's guardians all kill you in inicredibly amusing ways if you get thier questions wrong "You must play music for all time" and "As punishment, you may no longer have skin"

Of course, even though I haven't played it yet, Maniac Mansion probably has the best death scenes [or so I'm told], from what I've heard, involving the microwave [Radioactive Steam and frying the rabbit]

    Three words for you:

    Eaten by Sinistar.

The only way that could possibly be improved would be if it belched afterward.

I remembered it now. It was Secret Of Monkey Island.

I'm still partial to Ghouls N' Ghosts, where when any enemy just barely grazes a half-nekkid Arthur, he completely loses all his skin as he flies backwards, collapses into a pile of bones, and I just LOVE how his skull's jaw opens up a second after officially dying. An absolute classic, and even my mother likes it!

My favorite of all time has to be after a 2-player game on Rampart...the winner gets to put the loser in a Guillitine (sp? the thing with a sharp blade that drops down to be-head somebody). Basically the loser gets to press a couple buttons while he is waiting to die (make him scream, close eyes, crowd yell "PULL!") and the winner gets to do the honor of dropping the blade at his will.

I know SOMEBODY has to have a pic of it...if not I can post one sometime tonight.

What version of Rampart is that? In the SNES version the winner makes the loser walk the plank.

Memorable deaths for me are most of the ways you can die in Prince of Persia. Getting impaled on spikes is especially cool. I also LOVE the sound your guy makes when you fall in a pit in Impossible Mission II. He lets out this loud, life-like death yell that sounds almost eery. Sometimes when I'm playing I'll repeatedly jump in pits on purpose just to hear his death cry.

Close. Very close. Same game, different enemy.

Damn, the videos are down. Anyways, when you meet the Garrador's (blind wolverines), if you're near death and they hit you with their charge they'll impale your face, lift you up by your skull and disembowel you.

    BEAUTIFUL.

Ahh, I was talking about the Genesis version...never played the SNES version but it makes sense that Nintendo would change the death scene.
