gamegear battery ?

I was wondering if there was a known way to place or fix the rechargable battery pack for the Sega Gamegear.

It's the model that plugs into the AC port on the top of the system

That battery pack contains a common rechargable R/C car battery.

the only thing is that it uses a different connector on it than the stardard R/C battery so some soldering would be required.

I am at some point going to attempt this and see if i can get mine to work.

He didn't mention what is wrong with it that needs to be fixed. It could be in 65 pieces for all we know.

Please indicate what is wrong with the unit.

Ah, it's likely a worn out battery, refer to the recommendation given by Push Upstairs.

I took out my game gear battery and it is not a standard battery. It is a 7.2v, but the connector is different than the normal batteries, it would have to be soldered on to the new battery, which isn't a big problem. My question is will it make a difference is I plug a NI-MH in instead of a Ni-cd battery? I would rather use a Ni-Mh.

No as long as you have the same voltage it should be fine.

Yes, it will make a big difference if you use NiMH batteries. They require different charging methods than NiCd cells do, and they may not even take a charge from the AC power unit. If they do charge, they could overheat in the battery pack, and heat kills NiMH cells.
Technically you could install a charging IC into the battery pack, but it's easier and cheaper just to buy the NiMH cells and a charger at the store.

If you want to restore the battery pack, you'll need sub C NiCd cells for it. Those kind of cells are designed to withstand the abuse high current device like an RC car or a Game Gear can dish out.

That said, I highly recommend you get half a dozen NiMH AA cells and a charger with at least six slots. That way, you can still get the 10 to 12 hours of play time from the NiMH cells and you won't have any headaches to go with it.

I've posted some ideas on charging NiMH cells internally in the Game Gear over at atariage. The circuits are kind of complex, but they'll get the job done.

Check into one of your local battery stores, too. Some of them, like Batteries Plus and their ilk, can make custom battery packs for many applications, and they might just be able to duplicate what's inside the pack for you so that it's, well, literally as good as new.
