Default Tuesday Grudge Match: Baseball Stars vs. RBI Baseball

2 legendary NES baseball games, considered by some to be better than everything before or since. SNK's Baseball Stars and Namco's RBI Baseball.

Man that was hard to pick one. Baseball Stars has all the options you want in a baseball game. Make your own team, make a player and custom league. But RBI was the first to use real player names. Me and my dad still play RBI everytime I visit him. So for personal reasons I picked RBI. Funny thing is the best part about RBI are the glitiches. The home run through the walls, throwing the ball into the stands, stuff like that makes me love it. But if that kind of stuff happend in a game I bought today, I would be crying and bitching about the programmers and how they should be fired. I am a cranky old man.

No contest. Baseball Stars wins it hands down. After all, it is the true ancestor to today's baseball games, with its season simulation, salary management, hiring and firing of players/managers... It was a much deeper game than any baseball game that was ever released on a console. All it was missing was a MLB license to round it off.

For single player I agree, but I never cared for 2 player on baseball stars. Again I admit I am bias, but for some reason I always like RBI for a 2 player game.

Nothing tops Detriot in RBI Baseball (the first one). I played that game to death when I was little. Hell I played RBI 3 to death too. RBI Is teh winna!!!!
Because it makes no attempt to be great, it is therefore extremely great.

It's a tie. Baseball Stars definitely beats out the first RBI, but not RBI 2 & 3. Real players, classic teams, switch hitting, better play control. Baseball Stars doesn't come close to those two sequels IMO.

It's all about Baseball Stars to me. Still one of my favorite games ever made.

Baseball Stars. The RPG-ish aspect of it is awsome, and you can play as the freakin American Dreams or whatever they are called. Something about this game has a hint of Japanese quirkyness, which I like.

To me, Baseball Stars easily wins that match. One of the key games of my youth...

RBI baseball. Doesn't really compare though. I mean RBI baseball was my very first sports game. And I have to admit, I haven't played that much of Baseball Stars. Even though I own the game.

Baseball stars was fun and made for a great game. In RBI you get so many god damn inside the park home runs that it's just ridiculous, but also fun if you're screwing over your opponent. But as much fun as it is i'm going to go with the game that offers better play. Baseball Stars.

    RBI Baseball!
The old school twins with Viola and Kirby Puckett. Plus, its a great game that you can play in a very short time span (~15 mins). Only gripe is all the players are white .

Even though the AD team was more powerful, I preferred the Ninjas myself, and Sasuke's submarine delivery.

RBI Baseball. I think that the Family Stadium/Famista series (the series of baseball games that Namco/Namcot developed which, when brought over here, became RBI Baseball) is the best video game baseball series.

Baseball Stars is my pick. For its time it surpassed all the other 8-bit baseball games except maybe Reggie Jackson Baseball which is of similar quality.

For the RBI series, I wish Tengen had continued bringing over Namco's Famista series like they did with the first game instead of making their own sequels. There's nothing wrong with Tengen's games but I prefer the cartoonish Namco ones.

Baseball Stars for me as well. It was a game several of us kids in the neighborhood used to argue who built the best team. Of course I did. But RBI does deserve an honorable mention , great game as well.

If you're talking about options and overall presentation, Baseball Stars wins hands down. But if you're talking about actual on-field play mechanics, then the RBI games blow Baseball Stars out of the water. Hence, I voted for RBI. I love all the things you can do "outside of the diamond" in Baseball Stars, but for my money, the NES RBI series has the best on-field play mechanics of any 8-bit Baseball game.

Baseball stars was awsome, it has to be to be one of the few sports games (non super-rare) to hold tremendous value over the years.
