Saw something interesting in one of the local game stores near me. It was a game boy color cart, transparent pink plastic, instead of colorless. The label had art from Legend of Zelda : Ocarina of Time, and the Japanese (katakana) I could make out said "Zelda (kanji here) Ocarina". There was also a bit of additional Asian text across the top which I couldn't identify, except that it didn't look much like Japanese.
The owner let me fire the game up on one of his for-sale GBCs, and the intro for Link's Awakening promptly came up, followed by the LA title screen, untranslated (Japanese, I think, but I didn't pay attention). Once I loaded a save file for right at the start of the game, dialogue from the English version came on screen. I didn't play at length, but it seemed like the dialogue from the official English release was reinserted into a Japanese ROM. I've never heard of nor seen anything like this. Anybody know a story behind this?
