After going wireless, you will never go back. There is no reason not to get one as they work just as well as a wire controller. I can sit on the floor and hold the controller over my head pointed towards the ceiling while my dogs fight all around and on me without experiencing any loss of control. Eventually, you will have to replace the batteries, but that is no big deal compared to the benefits.
This question was just asked and answered earlier this month.
wireless PS2 controller question

This question seems to be about all wireless controllers, and until the current generation they haven't been quite as hot.
I really liked the Nintendo Satellite, but that doesn't de-wire you. It seems to stay connected really well, and I never had any problems with it. I don't really use it any more though.
Since the Satellite, I never experiemented with Wireless controllers until just recently when I got some Wavebird controllers. Now, I agree with everyone that says that you'll never go back. The Wavebird controllers are incredible, and without wires means that my living room has looked 50 times cleaner and I can move my GameCube back further to a much better spot.
After the Wavebirds, I bought two of the Logitech Precision controllers for the Xbox. I love Logitech as a company. I can't imagine I'll ever want to go back to my usual controllers now. These are just amazing. With both of those, you can walk anywhere and keep playing. I pitched to a batter a few times from my bedroom with walls in between. Of course, I sucked since I couldn't see the game, but it worked.
I wholeheartedly recommend newer wireless controllers. I doubt I'll ever go back
