Default Tuesday Grudge Match: DOOM vs. Wolfenstein 3D

Unquestionably 2 of the most important and influential games in the FPS genre. Wolfenstein 3D put the genre on the map, and Doom launched it into the stratosphere.

Having never played the first Doom, I have to give it to Wolfenstein.

Was there ever a Wolfenstein 2D?
I go online sometimes, but ... everyone's spelling is really bad, and it's ... depressing.

wolf3d was fun, but the first time I put the free episode of DOOM on my computer I could tell it was a revolution of a game.

Wolfenstein 2D was called "Castle Wolfenstein", and its sequal was called "Beyond Castle Wolfenstein". They were older computer games, available for the Apple II, Commodore 64, PC, and other systems.

That being said ... boy that's a toughie. I LOVED Wolfenstein 3D (something about shooting dogs gives me warm fuzzies) but I think the network play on Doom might give it the upper edge. I spent a lotta time at work back in the day playing Doom on our network while answering tech support calls.

Easy decision for me. Wolfenstein hands down. WHen Doom came out I didnt have a computer fast enough to play it, so I just kept on playing Wolf. I had the full game, plus the Spear of Destiny expansion pack. I played the game even before I had a soundcard, and had the PC speaker sound going. Man...So man good memories. Doom just never had that same level of charm that Wolfenstein had. It was fun, scary, bloody, and funny. I mean, come on...Colonel Fettgesicht? (Colonel Fat Face) Good stuff.

I still remembr that final boss battle with mecha-Hitler.

My id favourite is Doom 2. While the first Doom was fun it didn't do that much for me. Doom 2 on the other hand is one of my all time favourite games. The extra monsters and weapon perfected the game. Heck I still download the ocational .wad file.

Wolf 3D is undeniably cool, but Doom is creepy. And that rocks. Givin' it up to Doom.

IMO both games withstand the test of time very well and remain a blast to play even today. But I went with Doom, because to me it was a lot more atmospereic and immersive, and it's more fun.

I'd say Doom. When I saw Wolfenstein it was on a buddy's computer. He booted it up pretty much to rub in my face he had a VGA card (at the time my 8088 just had a Herc/CGA card) and that the game only ran at that high a color rate (remember when 16 colors was "high"?). The game looked neat but to me everythng looked the same: corridors, rooms, etc. Plus I didn't quite "get" the whole FPS thing and the Nazi theme just didn't do it for me.

Then Doom came along. I forgot where I heard about it, probably a magazine. My then girlfriend had a 486 SX 33 with a VGA card and modem access to Prodigy (yes Prodigy) and I'm almost positive that's where I downloaded it from. When it was downloaded (took forever) I installed it and was sucked in. Never had a game made me subconsciously look around the edge of the monitor to see if I could look around the corner of a wall in the game to see if demons were coming. Simply brilliant.

The Doom wads really sealed the deal. Anyone remember the Barney one? There hardly anything more creepy than navigating in these mazes hearing "I looove you...yoooou loooove meeeee." echoing in the distance.

I give props to Wolf 3D but Doom set the genre on fire.

This is a DAMN tough call. I used to play them all the time when I was little (yes, seriously, I wasn't jarred that much by violence in grade school), and now that I've rediscovered them, I remember why they were so awesome in the first place. Wolfenstein is simpler, what with only four weapons, five varieties of enemies (bosses notwithstanding), and only one plane on every dungeon. I'm all for simpler games, but Doom's atmosphere is one that I like much more. Don't get me wrong, Nazi Germany makes for a good gaming setting, but outer space and Hell overrun by demons??! Not much beats that. I also have fonder memories of Doom, like shitting bricks when I first heard the pissed off roar of two very angry Barons of Hell... and let's not even get into the Cyberdemon. As I said, damn tough call, but I'll give my preference to Doom. It's the one that I got more enjoyment and MUCH more challenge out of, not that Wolf3D was easy. But Doom is ball-breakingly vicious on Hurt Me Plenty difficulty, and I shudder to poke it with Ultra-Violence.

Nightmare difficulty doesn't count. No one can beat it.

I clicked on this thread expecting zero Wolfenstein votes and I'm surprised it has a bunch considering Doom took the formula and improved the graphics, atmosphere and gameplay massively.

I played a lot of Wolf 3D when it came out, but it hasn't aged as well as Doom I think. I played Wolf on Return to Castle Wolfenstein and it was fun for about 15 minutes...

DOOM by far, not just because it was the first mature game that i have ever played (i was 7), for some reason it just feels better to play. And c'mon, Zombies or no Zombies, good ol WWII is just getting old!

Wolfenstein 3D was what made DOOM possible and it was great fun mowing down a bunch of nazi's but DOOM was much better. Don't forget the mod scene that started to build up too. Hey even I was able to make a small mod back then with the huge amount of tools made available. DOOM and DOOM2 while graphically inferior have better layouts/maps and gameplay than a lot of new games!
