Dreamcast has the loudest disc access I've ever heard. It's normal, and some games it's louder than others.

nope that never happened to me on both systems.Maybe you need a new cd drive or it could be that your system is dying.Good luck figuring out what is happening to your systems Kaine23.

That Happened to me on my PS2. it made noises like a DC. I thought it was just a small little problem, but i overlooked it. Now, it wont read the discs. If your PS2 noises are THAT loud, than maybe you should have it looked at.

I'm wondering if that's the vase with first-gen DC and PS2 systems myself actually. Anyway to tell by their serial #s?

    Yup.

My DC makes more noise than the PS2 but they're both pretty noisy. The DC is notoriously noisy, in fact!

My DC is pretty loud, but I've never had a problem with my PS2.

Yeah, I was trying out Jojo and couldn't belive how loud it was actually! PS2 gets loud sometimes during loading sequences..sometimes with Vice City or MKA. Is this a thing with first-gen systems or a general thing?

I have heard that the DCs made in Japan are a bit quieter than the ones made in China. Is this a rumor?

Thanks Antics, that's all I was really wondering since to me it seemed like a first-gen issue. Glad to know I'm not the only one then.

My PS2 is *extremely* loud while playing Tekken Tag Tournament. But I don't hear it at all with any other game. And TTT is quite a bit quieter if I lay my PS2 horizontally instead of vertically.

The DC is definitely a loud machine in general...

    PS2
Grinding noise with blue discs = slippage. That's all it is -slippage.

Easy crappy fix= put some thin stips of electrical tape evenly on the disc where the spindle will grab it. EVENLY! It can't wobble or it won't work. Nice tight disc grab after.

Harder fix= go inside, finely sandpaper the top white part of spindle, and compress air clean. Consider adding a small round fridge magnet (no kidding!) to top of white magnetic disc gripper. Also, clean the bottom black part of spindle (Cd sits on this) with good cellophane tape. This removes lint and finger grease from the spindle, helping it grab better.

Keep your fingers off the center of the discs! Finger oils seem to be exacerbating this issue, with the PS2 only. It seems many (but not all by any means) disc read errors are caused by this. Therer are other DRE issues plaguing the PS2, and I think I've found fixes for most.

My PS2 is "whisper quiet," but my Dreamcast is another story. It sounds like an old dot-matix printer printing on fan-fold paper!

Has anybody found a way to quiet them down? Replace the laser drive? Loosen a screw? Wear earplugs?
