Default What's the take on Doom and Doom 2 in the CE version of D3?

I know that Doom 3 CE has it's own thread, but everybody is just drooling all over themselves about how great Doom 3 is and they aren't really saying anything about the Doom and Doom 2 ports.

I talked to one guy on another website that said that he thought the ports were total crap. Then another guy said that he liked it alot. So I'm trying to get some more insight on this.

I'm playing through the first Doom on the CE and I don't have any complaints with it -- no difference between it and the PC version as far as I can tell.

The only bitch that I've detected is that the music is a bit slower and therefore not as rocking. Other than that, it's practically dead on with the PC versions.

You can play them on Live. That'll do it for me. The music doesn't seem paced any differently, then again I haven't done a comparison.

Actually you can't play them on Live. It specifically tells you you're logging out before you load the classic Dooms. Spltiscreen co-op and deathmatch only.

I really like the new ports of Doom on the XBOX, but I don't like the left/right turning speed. And there is no apparent way to bump it up. Just a little too slow for me.

I'm wondering if this would be considered the best port of Doom ever to play on a console system?

Doom has appeared on many video game systems, SNES, 32X, Jaguar, 3DO, PSX, Saturn, etc, etc.

As for all those versions, most consider the PSX version to be the best.

So I wonder if this port for the XBOX is better than the PSX version?

I would imagine it is, considering the XBOX is basically a PC, and I'm guessing that the Doom port runs in 480p which is basically 640 x 480 on a PC. And it runs in progressive scan just like the VGA signal for a computer monitor.

Would this be the definitive version of Doom if you are going to play it on a console rather than the PC?

Yes. The only thing wrong is the turning speed is a bit too slow. Otherwise it outshines all other console versions that I have played.

There's a FAQ writer over at GameFAQs who specializes in Doom ports. And he's very adamant about the fact that some are just as good or better than the PC version in many ways.

I'm not sure exactly, but I think I remember him saying that Doom for the N64 was the best non-PC version. Which I guess isn't too surprising, because N64 had a great controller for FPSes.

Yeah that sucks, Doom 1 & 2 on live would rock. But as they are I think they're very good ports, and worth playing.

If you want to play doom online, get zdaemon for the PC. Doom online with support for up to 16 players.

I remember when I first got Doom 64, I had such huge expectations. One of the things that I didn't like about it, is that this game is really freaking dark. I mean, you have to really turn up the contrast on your TV super high, and you have to turn the brightness up a little bit, and you have to play in a really dark room to even see what the hell is going on.

Also, the levels have been totally changed and altered, so it really isn't DOOM, it's more like "The Midway interpretation of what Doom should have been".

It's still a pretty cool game, all things considered, but man is the game freaking dark.

I'll second that, even with the in-game brightness up you had to squint at times to see what you were doing or shooting at.

Someone actually released a TC for Doom 2 a while back that attempts to duplicate the Doom 64 experience.

Its ok, music doesnt seem as upbeat though.

If ure box is modded get doomlegacy and drop in the original doom wads, that way you can play the original on yer tv! Oh and it supports splitscreen co-op too.
