    Default Cartridge Storage Ideas

I've flicked through the Room of Doom pages to discover neat and practical solutions to storing box-less SNES and N64 cartridges. Unfortunately, I found nothing of use.

The problem is, whichever way you stack or line up your cartridges, you cannot see the labels. You cannot identify the game at a distance like you can a box.

I saw that some people stored the cartridges in trays or drawers that they can sort through with ease. I even saw a tray that seemed designed to hold SNES carts, though it didn't hold very many.

I've also seen a little six-cart tray packaged inside a zip protective case, but six slots isn't ideal for me.

So I'm opening this up to you, experienced collectors. Enlighten me to the best way of storing and protecting my box-less carts.

    I thank you

I must admit, storing/identifying N64 carts is a pretty big pain. However, what I do with my SNES carts is stack them label downwards, alphabetically. You can still see the top label, and identify what game it is at a glance.

I should have stated in the post itself, I'm in the UK. The PAL carts don't have that top label

I've seen people tape paper labels on the top of carts. I'm not a huge fan of this, but it might do the trick.

Alright, check this out: I just came up with this idea, and it's pretty terrible, but I really think there is no good answer on this... so here is a sort of bad one.

You have seen that game, Connect Four? Here's a pic:

Basically, you make a wooden panel that sits about six feet high, with a base, and you put plexiglass on the front, and leave about 4 inches at the bottom, with a 1 inch space between the wood and glass, and you put your games in like that. That way, you'll always be able to see all of your collection, and to get the games, you just pull them out from the bottom, and put them in from the top, like Connect Four.

Right, terrible idea. I just line mine up one behind the other, and it sucks, too.

Thanks for taking the time to reply, guys. And thanks for confirming that anyone with PAL carts endures the same problem.

That Connect 4 idea isn't that bad, the idea of what you are saying - and I can imagine it - is good. Though I don't really feel like "dropping" my cartridges in

As for sticking labels on the top. Firstly, I don't know why the PAL carts didn't come with a top label. There is certainly room for one! As for sticking my own on, I don't know how comfortable I am with that. Sure, second hand carts have been through the wars enough that a little label isn't going to be a big deal, but I just don't think I could bring myself to "deface" something Nintendo.

Thanks for the suggestions, though. I keep a list of everything I own, so I guess I could fill one tray/box, and include a copy of the sheet in there. At least, in the long-term, it would help narrow things down a bit.

Either that or I could start importing.

Well, another idea would be to get storage bins, but really THIN ones, or baskets like these:
    http://shopping.msn.com/eshopframe.a...snshopping%3d1

That way you could put the games in face up, and stack them above each other, so you would only have to take baskets off to see maybe 15 or 20 games.

That's a great find! I didn't think of having them face up and NO layers on top of each other. Great call.

Though if I don't do it, its because I want to have them stacked somehow to show them off for pictures :S

    Thanks for the suggestion!

How about adapting something like this for carts: http://members.aol.com/_ht_a/cillcro...dwallpock.html

Know anyone into Crochet? I was actually looking for the clear plastic holders for CDs (like this link), but this came up and looks better and more adaptable, not to mention home-made.

One thing you could try with N64 games would be this thing i found at walmart called CD Wallpaper.. It a plastic sheet that you can tack to you wall, and it should hold 24 CD or carts.

Storing N64 carts (or pal SNES) is definatley a real pain. I suggest just putting them in large rubbermaid storage bins, in alphabetical order. I realize that it still isn't as easy to find a game as it should be, but you can get an idea to where a game is.

What I did with my N64 carts was print of some labels, and tape them to the top of the cart. Problem solved.
<Evan_G> i keep my games in an inaccessable crate where i can't play them

I really like that idea! Unfortunately, my game room is a section of my basement, and there aren't any closets... I could just hang that on the wall, which I may do.

Another idea, which is also kind of sucky (like my last one), is to make a big white standing platform, or use a door, and put white velcro, and then put little tiny velcro stickers on the upper back of each cart. It would be easy to pull games on and off, and the velcro would come off easily if you ever changed your format.

    Just an idea...

That's the best way you can do it.

Unless you don't like the idea of doing, all that digging to play the game that you 'want to work at.
