Default Video Game Collector - a USA magazine? Tell Me More!

This i picked up today for 99p... was in a clearance box in my local Comic Book shop...

I had never seen it before or heard of it at all! I noticed the USA price tag in the bottom corner and thought i could rely on you lot for information!

Came free with a Megaman Card!

So is this magazine still going?

Dude, the search engine is your friend. Here's a post I made one year ago:

    Video Game Collector magazine

There are also several OTHER VGC Mag threads which discuss its current status. Finally, please resize the poster-sized image. Thank yew.

I think I saw the premiere copy of this at Barnes & Noble a couple of months ago. I wasn't very impressed. First of all with respect to console coverage the mag didn't go back far enough (i.e - pre-NES) for my tastes. Secondly, despite the nice slick and glossy look the content didn't seem to get into anything that free online sources like Atari Age, Retrogaming times and of course, Digital Press haven't already covered in more detail. Thirdly, the magazine came with a CD-ROM containing some scary looking (read: suspected spyware) classic game clones for PC installation.

I don't know if it's still published or not. So yeah, it's a nice addition to your collection, but not much more than that.

I'd like to know how in earth it managed to get over here... unless the previous owner imported it. Very strange... don't normally see many US magazines on sale outside of newsagents like that.

I picked it up for free at Joe's during the NJ classic. Too much style, too little substance. Its layout reminded me of Inquest, but without good writing.

I got a copy of this at my local bookstore a week or two ago. It's always interesting to see a new product (I hadn't seen any previous issues) but I also doubt I'll buy it again.

Wrong mag, you are talking about the UK Retrogamer magazine. Video Game Collector is a US magazine and it does not have a CD-ROM attached to it. I just got my third issue, which covers PRE NES. Check it out, it grows on you

I picked up a subscription at last year's CGE, and I think it's got a lot of potential. I don't like how most every caption for every pic and screen shot has to try to be funny (some are, but a lot not so much. Maybe I just don't get it...).

Plus the rarities and prince guide in the back are pretty nice. Could use some more reviews, but overall I like it.

Hmmm... I really look forward to getting this magazine. I think it's pretty darned good now, and it's only on its third issue. TRhe price guide in the back does repeat itself... that's the point of the back. New titles are added each time, though, and prices go up and down each issue based on the market.

I especially like the articles and interviews, and I think it's written well as a whole.

Just my 2 cents, and that's about all it's worth according to my friends.

Thanks for indulging my gaming habit when I was young, Dad. You were the best. I miss you. ~David Barnes 1926-2007~

Heh. Don't let Zach hear you say that.

On a side note, I still have not received my third issue. Perhaps I was removed from the comp list after my (fair) review here of issue 2 back in October:

Or maybe mine is just late...

Anyway, it is a pretty good mag, and we should all support such a retro effort.

    You so funny ManciGames!

I got mine a few days ago. Best one yet.

I recieved issue #2 free and enjoyed it quite a bit. So much so I subscribed a couple of weeks ago. I think issue #3 is a bit overdue but I doesn't appear I'm going to get a quick second copy of #2 so I'm not complaining.
I thought the main purpose of the mag was to have a small handy price guide that you could carry around with you folded in your back pocket. The really pleasant part was that it provides a check box next to each title. I found I could use a color code system and have a tremendous amount of information about my games at my finger tips. A black check meant I have a complete copy, red check - missing a manual, yellow check - missing a box, green check means I'm searching for that title. Works out real well and it's fast too. I was using an inexpensive electronic personal organizer previously. It held 8000 addresses that I converted into my game database, but I began noticing after recording about 1200 entries the searches were starting to take a while. With VGC you just see everything you want to know almost instantly.
I don't expect to color code every issue I receive, but I can watch and note price trends and honestly, I enjoyed the articles. I hope they do well.

I'm thinking that it probably is, they seem to send them out when people start worrying about whether it's going to come out or not.

And I haven't had the opportunity to read it through yet (just enough time to skim the price guide and see what's gone up and down) but if it's anything like the first two issues I think it'll be worth the time of day.

Now, if only they'd work on those little captions...

I saw it at the OKGE, and I'd have to say the prices on items are sometimes stupidly overpriced. I can't remember exact prices, but I do know I had a good chuckle over the value of such common 5200 games as Megamania.

Well, that makes me feel a little better then. I thought maybe they couldn't take a little constructive criticism. That doesn't seem to be the case.

    Looking forward to it!

I've wanted to check out this mag for a while now. After the Gamego debacle i'm not so quick to throw my money to a magazine that's just starting out. I do look for it from time to time. I will eventually find it!
