Default Which is your favourite hack'n'slay RPG?

Well, the title says it all, so name your favourites (console games only if possible)! Hack'n'slay RPGs are the games I'm playing the most at the moment and I'm curious what games you like.

My favourite is the first Champions Of Norrath game. I really like the levels and it's also cool that you can make a custom character. Baldur's Gate - Dark Alliance 1 and Diablo on the PS1 are also great. Dark Alliance 2 is also good, but the elementar levels suck a lot so it lost its fun a bit for me. I haven't played the second Champions Of Norrath game but I hope it will be as good as the first part. And there is also A Bard's Tale to try out.

Would the Hunter games count? The ones based on the whitewolf RPG. I've got a couple xbox ones and they are pretty cool. Other than the fact that they are trigger-intensive (shoot and jump are on L and R), so it hurts to play it too long.

And of course...Gauntlet. Any variety of it.

I'll go for some classic ones, starting with the horribly underrated...

Popful Mail (Sega CD) You have to play this one - look for my other 30 or so posts about it, also in the "best Sega CD RPG thread"

Cadash (TurboGrafx-16) It's basically a lot like Zelda II with more RPG elements and better graphics. Again, another underrated classic that had Genesis and Arcade versions as well but this is my favorite.

The Hunter: The Reckoning Redeemer game looks good. I've checked out some screen shots, it reminds me a bit of Fallout - Brotherhood Of Steel. Also a great game like Baldur's Gate but in sci-fi style.

My love goes to Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance. I love Diablo, but for some reason, the first Diablo doesn't run very smoothly at all on our iBook (methinks it might just be a question of RAM, as I didn't try it since Steve added RAM to it - unless it simply doesn't run very well in Classic).

Diablo 2 was pretty good.. it was fairly mindless but had just enough depth to keep me interested.

Oldschool wise.. I LOVE goldenaxe.. it was the 1st that I really got into.

I had no idea that Hunter: the Reckoning was based on a White Wolf liscence...

Speaking of White Wolf, I love Vampire: The Masquerade - Redemption (PC) and Diablo I / II is fun in moderation.

PSO for the Gamecube and probably Fable.

Fable fits more into that hack n' slash fits into that category IMO. Its a fun game with a cool story and music.

Yeah, the Hunter RPG is based around the idea of people becming suddenly aware of the hidden undead / whatever living among the populace. They have to try and hunt them, while keeping in mind that to everyone else they just killed some guy, ect. Pretty damn cool game actually, just LOTS of unkowns...unless of course they've updated it since i last played which is quite possible. Hunter and Changeling are probably the only whitewolf games I could seriously play personally. Vampire and Werewolf just don't interest me too much.

Oh, and PSO counts? I love PSO as well. I've played like 8 different versions across several platforms and varying levels of legality.

Beyond Oasis and Alundra 1. Man I played the heck out of these. Can anyone reccomend any very similar to this that I would like? I never finished either one of these, I should go back and check them out soon. I remember the puzzles getting ridiculously tedious in Alundra very quickly though, eh I will have to give them a boot up again

Yup. The second, while good in it's own way, doesn't quite measure up to the first.

It was my first venture into the genre.

My wife LOVES dungeon hack games, especially the PS2 Baldur's Gate series, and the Champion of Norrath games.

    My faves include:

    Landstalker
    Cadash
    Magic Sword
    Gauntlet (in all it's incarnations)
    Arcus Odyssey
Gate of Doom & Wizard of Fire
Capcom's D&D games (Tower of Doom/Shadows Over Mystaria)
Shining In The Darkness (hey, it's a dungeon crawler too)
    Shining The Holy Ark (ditto)

and probably a few more I know I'm forgetting....

I would have to say Diablo II. I played that at least once a day since the day of release to sometime in 2003, when I FINALLY got tired of it.

Does the Dungeon Keeper series count? Those games were great..

if not, Neverwinter Nights was my fav, but I'm currently playing Untold Legends which is pretty fun..

Diablo 2 was ok, but I was really disappointed with it. It seemed more like an expansion to Diablo than an all out sequel. *shrug*

Does Actraiser qualify? I can't tell you how many times I went through that damn game... it's probably on my top ten list of games. I'd say that the action scenes fit the bill for the hack-and-slay bit, and the "Observe The People" bits, as I call them for a lack of better name, are certainly adequate for the RPG part. If Actraiser doesn't qualify with the definition, then I'm saying Brave Fencer Musashi for my honorable mention.
