Default To collect or not to collect, that is the question.

Well, right now I have a chance to complete my domestic Microvision collection. I only have four boxed games for the system currently. The problem is that the lot that I have been offered is nothing but loose games. I hate having loose games. I don't mind it so much for the SNES, NES, and Atari 2600, but for anything else... meh. I can't even stand how many incomplete Genesis games I have.

As it is, I am leaning against purchasing the lot. What would you do?

It all depends on what you want to do with it. Are you in it for the pure gaming and nostalgia aspect of knowing "hey, i have that game i rented back x amount of years ago" or do you want to look at a collection and say "Yeap, every box and instruction manual is there." I myself, have ALL loose carts in my atari collection, and I try to have as many complete genesis games as possible. Just do what you feel you would like to have and look at/play in the long run.

Always take a good deal. You can always upgrade your collection as you find better, and sell off your lesser quality on here or even E-bay. Once a collectable always a collectable.
So if the price is right BUY IT!

It realy depends what your buying it for. If your only interested in it because you want a complete checklist, I say go for it. Loose is loose, but who knows when you will next have the chance? It realy depends on how much they want for it. If your buying it to play, I say go for it. The boxs and manuels are nice aditions but they dont make the games any less playable.

If the lot is cheap enough..buy it and if you can make profit resell it..
Then you can buy more boxed games.
    ................

    ...............
I also collect for this system...

    EDIT:
    Here's My Old,Current Collection Pick..
This pick must be 2-3 yrs old..but I've only bought about two more boxed games and around 6 loose.

I've always liked this system...and it's a conversational piece if I leave one out when company comes over.

I'd probably buy it if it was a good deal. You never know down the road you may come across the manuals or the boxes for the games. Check the orphanage often, ask around and someone may have what you're looking for. As already said you can always resell it all later for a nice profit if you bought it for a good price!

    it depends on the price

if its cheap, pick them up and work on boxes and manuals or complete later

you can always sell the loose copies

i dont much about this system, but if CIB arent all that hard to come by, then just hold out and get the CIBs one at a time as you find them

if you would be hard pressed to even get them loose, then just get the whole lot now and work on making them complete later

it all depends on the system

NES, SNES, 2600, 7800 ... stuff like that i will take loose with intentions of making them CIB eventually

stuff like O^2, XBox, PS2, GC, 32x etc i will only accept CIB

just decide what is best for you ... the gamer view or the collector view

Have all Microvisions not succumbed to screen rot at this point?

I'm not too much of a stickler for "complete" products, so I'd say just buy em and upgrade later.

I'd figure yes..but I'm not sure if this is caused by age or temperature/conditions.

The 6 Microvisions in my Pick are working..at one time I was Microvision Nuts..I They didn't come all fully working.
....about 4 had cart to unit connection issues and or the knob wasn't responsive..(fixed)

My first Microvision buy was listed on Ebay as a two dead screen units (screen rot)..
The guy had taken the two units apart and could not fix them..
One had screen rot but the other was just a cart to unit connection issue.
I wanted to take this on and I had never seen one in person plus the auction ended cheap..
Once I fixed it I was hooked on getting these and messing with them...I even had told the seller of my first unit that I fixed it and he was amazed after he had tried everything, but overlooked a cart to unit connection issue.

One of my units has a shorter knob that belongs on it but I've never came across another one like that..(?)
(The one with Pinball in it)
Unfortunately I have bought a lot of screen rot Microvisions..I have 4 dead units that I saved for parts(no hope)..4 of which are in the unit boxes in the pick..The rest I got rid of...

I keep Boxed carts untouched and buy loose carts to use.

I can see myself playing one of these tomorrow..

I'd buy them if they're cheap.

I debated about a very hard to find loose cart for my N64 collection, because it wasn't complete. Someone else grabbed it and now I have to keep searching. If I find it loose again....I'm grabbing it. A box or complete might come later.

How I have looked at it with my collections is:

    - If it is really cheap? I will buy and always "upgrade" later.

    - If it is really expensive? I'll wait until the right one comes along.

There are a few Dreamcast games I have waited to get becasue they weren't 100% complete... but they were also really expensive. If the game hadn't sold for as much money, I would've picked it up and worried about it later.

I have had the same problem myself with respect collecting Genesis games, in particular the harder to find games such the Wisdom Tree games. I take two approaches, depoending on the rarity of the game. If the game is not rare, I generally will not buy the game, unless it is mixed in a lot of games, some complete, some not. My rationale is that why buy loose, when I'll probably just have to buy the game again complete at a later date and time.

Now if the game is rare, and I can get a good deal on it, I'll buy it loose because I may not be able to find it complete, or I can buy a loose manual or box at a later date and time, or I can even buy it complete and resell the loose one later.

So IMO it really depends on whether you have the money and are willing to sit on those items until you can find them complete. Unless these games are rare, I would not purchase the lot.

I have a CIB Microvision collection. I collected it because as a kid I really wanted it, but my parents refused to buy it for me. My buddy used to rub his in my face all the time.

That sounds very much the same why I bought a Vectrex..
