    Default Pac-Man's 25th Anniversary

Wow, CNN's really on the ball.

Wasn't the 25th Anniversary several years ago in connection with the release of Pac-Man World for the PSX?

    Lessee... 1980 + 25 = 2005.

Oh, and it's also the 25th anniversary of Defender. Of course, I doubt that Midway will celebrate much, if at all.

I remember CNN's other video game article about the emergence of female characters in games. They were only a good two decades late with it.

It's also the 75th Anniversary of the Looney Tunes, and we know how Warner is celevrating that......

(Though, to their credit, the first true star of WB animation, Porky Pig, is still five years away from his 75th.)

Well, to be fair, most people do consider 2005 to be the 25th anniversary. It was a 1980 game- at least, here in America.

It's a fairly notable anniversary, because Pac-Man was more than a hugely popular videogame. He was the first true pop icon of the 1980s. I don't know just how to explain to kids today just how BIG Pac-Man was back then.

Even today, no videogame character can reach that kind of universal appeal. Hardly anyone had home computers or videogame machines, but everyone knew Pac-Man.

What do you mean, Inky, Blinky, Clide, and Sue are'nt GHOSTS? Of COURSE they are!

And yeah, Pac-Man was released in 1980 in the rest of the world, so it's fitting for a 25 year anniversary.

I can recall a little of how big Pac-Man was as a kid -- I ate some cereal and other food products with his image, watched a Pac-Man cartoon, had Pac-Man joke books and 'how to win' books, even had a record that had a Pac-Man adventure on it.

Sue??? I didn't know Clyde got a sex change! (FYI, Clyde was the 4th ghost/monster/whatever in Pac-Man, and he was replaced by Sue in Ms. Pac-Man...).

Yeah, I remember all these things too... especially the Pac-Man canned pasta (although I was more of a Smurfs canned pasta girl -- I spent most of grade 3 eating that for lunch at school... I had an iron stomach when I was 9!).

    Default Ghosts

    Hmm

No no no. They were Bashful, Shadow, Speedy and Pokey!

Ok, my first impression when seeing Pac Man was not that good. More like "That's cute, but what do you blow up?"

But the idea of a video game sprite having a name was born. Paving the way for Mario.

I remember two distinct versions of the pacman character being used and have always wondered about how the licensing was handled. The pacman candy I have from 1982 shows one style of pacman owned by midway and some figures I have show a coleco copyright and the original arcade style was namco. I guess that was the start of complicated licensing

    Default One more pacman memory

    Another thing,

The dentist I took my kids too in the late 80's had a caberet sized pacman set on free play. They wanted to go to the dentist every month then

    Default Always go back.

Why is it that no matter what game you're playing right now, whether it be Resident Evil 4, GT4, GTA, Halo 2, etc, you always go back to playing the classics? I mean, is there really any better guilty pleasure than playing a few rounds of Ms. Pac-Man?

Ha, my dentist as a kid had arcade machines with free play. Q-Bert and Centipede in one office, and Ms. Pac Man, Popeye, and Double Dragon in his other office. I always loved going to the dentists!
