Default Emulation on PSP gets one step closer...

    http://www.engadget.com/entry/1234000020042836/

Japanese Firmware 1.00 only. But it's a start.

Here's hoping eventually I can dump a bunch of NES ROM's on my PSP. Heaven. Even a US version of the GB Emulator would be good.

I figured that this would happen eventually given the fact that the system uses a memory stick.

Very cool though, can't wait till they make it full screen, that's when I'll be buying a PSP

Somehow, someway, Nintendo would be on that like stink on shit. I have no problems with playing roms on a computer with a dinky ass USB controller, but to go through these processes shows some sort of messed up dependency cunundrum thats equivalent to shooting up speed instead of snorting it.

Unfortunately, the PSP cannot display true low res graphics, so unless the emulator authors are VERY thoughtful and include some filters...namely scanlines to offset crappy scaling, the games will look like crap. Then again, there are people here that like playing the 16-bit games on a LCDs.

    [Raises hand]

I like playing my old games on non-filtered emulators. I actually LIKE the pixellated look of the graphics. It's the same reason so many people like the older first generation NES boxes. Pixel Art Kicks Ass!

Plus, I'd MUCH rather play SMB at full size on a PSP than squished on the GBA. Bring it on, hackers. Just don't publicize it so much until you finish it. Give Nintendo less time to react. Once I have my copy of the emulator, then you can tell Nintendo.

It's still pixel art w/ scanlines and in low-res... and looks more original as well.

No. No scan lines! I don't want them. Sure, they look nice. But as long as I can turn them off, I'm happy.

Scan lines only work well when you have the video at 2x or more. The PSP would only be able to hold the NES video at 1x unstretched. That would not look good IMHO.

Here here! I can't stand scanlines on emulated displays. I get crap about it all the time with MAME - "it looks more realistic!" yeah, but only if you're using smoked plexy and very few games (compared to the entire MAME romset) used them.

That dissapointed me too - I'd take windowed NES emulation on the GBA over squished screen or sized beyond the viewable area anytime. Really though the big N pretty much has no say. The legalality issues come down to the NES roms themselves which have been around for nearly a over a decade now. Just means more duplication turnout work (cost of shipping only of course) for those who have the 10,000+ NES romset.

...............which I don't have nor know of anyone that does.

I'd say you could fit two of those on the screen.

Well, at least the people you run w/ know what they're talking about.

Yeah, only a few... like almost all of them? What games that run in Mame aren't run in low res?

At some point if we can play SNES, Genesis and TG-16 games at full speed on the PSP, that will be a dream come true.

Just a note -- you have lots of dreams, don't you? 36 on these forums to be exact.

*sniffs around* Hmmm... I smell something burning... oh, I know - must be all the barely underplayed flaming going on in this thread.

You're mistaken. I'm talking about the NES. Whose resolution is 256x240. The PSP is 480x272. A Game Boy, sure, you can stretch that. But an NES, no. No way. Not vertically at least. It'll be just small enough to fit the PSP screen.

Also, to stretch a Game Boy image, you'd need 288 pixels high. The PSP would have to crop it.

No, I think an NES emulator would fit perfectly on the PSP.

    It is to dream.

It could be offset to one side and give room for a quick back and forth game / gamelist toggle in the margin accessable with the L / R buttons. A nice NES frontend.

I'd settle for good Saturn emulation on the PC.
