Default Advice on my next console

First of all, I apologise for being a noob, you probably see lots of these threads.

I have a SNES, Megadrive, N64 and PS2 and I'm in the UK. I'm looking at getting another console from the late 80s and early 90s. Could someone suggest a good one for me? I've thought about the Atari Jaguar, what's that like? I've also thought about the NES and Master System but decided I'd keep my money for something which isnt just like the Megadrive and SNES, at least until I'm a more serious collector.

    Thanks for any help.

At the moment i am really getting into the Neo Geo MVS, as games are heaps cheaper than their AES counterparts. It is really easy to turn them into consoles to. Just buy a jamma harness, an AT pc power supply, two db15 adapters, a female molex, a scart cable and some neo geo joy sticks. then enjoy!

    i would say Trbografx-16/PC engine.

the system is from the late 80's early 90's and has a lot of good to great games for it. one on my favorite games is Galaga 90.

go with the NES, it is absolutely not "just like the Megadrive and SNES" and it has a very good library imho, here are some games you should get

    Battle of Olympus
    Castlevania Series
    Chip & Chap 1+2
    Dr. Mario
    Duck Tales 1+2
    Excitebike
    Faxanadu
    Kickle Cubicle
    Kid Icarus
    Kirby’s Adventure
    Kung Fu
    Legend of Zelda I+II
    Little Samson
    Maniac Mansion
    Marble Madness
    Mega Man Series
    Metroid
    North & South
    Pirates!
    Probotector I+II
Star Tropics I+II (II as US-Import)
    Ski or Die
    Snake Rattle n Roll
    Super Mario Bros. Series
    Turtles I+II

i'm sure i forgot some, but it's enough

I'll second the Turbografx 16. If you want something that is completely different than the ones you have this is the way to go. Check out the Bonk's Adventure series, Bomberman '93, and like he said the Galaga '90. Just to name a few.

I wouldn't call the NES just more of the same either though.

    Default Best. System. Ever.

Forget the rest! Dreamcast is the clear and obvious choice! In the history of videogames there has never been such a great system that was dismissed so quickly. In the 2+ years it was around, it had the best games, the best online functions...but the worst negative P.R. in the brief history of our hobby. PS2 was more than a year away when Dreamcast came to America. Sony and their fan-boys told everyone to "just wait"...and most did! I still play my DC to this day and there is still limited online gaming(Quake III Arena, 4x4 Evolution, Phantasy Star 1&2, Starlancer and a few others). I even have a few emulators of classic systems and arcade machines for my DC. It is still relatively easy to obtain systems and games so give it a shot!

As much as I'd like that, I don't have bottomless pockets so I have to be picky.

The dreamcast is probably a bit recent for me, but there's a shop near me with one for £5.

The pc engine sounds ok, I've heard of it.

I might go for the NES. The Master System seems to have the exact same games as the Megadrive but with worse graphics so I assumed this would be the case with the NES.

I've also thought about the Commodore Amiga because my friend says he might have one in the loft. He says he might have thrown it out a few years ago, though.

    Thanks for the response.

An Amiga! Now thats a good idea. Although you can get all the same games for PC that still runs DOS.

Well are you going to be playing the games for enjoyment or for collecing purposes? If for playing purposes go with dreamcast, it has a ton of great games and is also easy to collect for.
If its just for collecting purposes go with the jaguar. A fairly small library of games with only a few titles that might be hard to find, it also has a few games worth playing (AvP)

If I were you, grab a Psone and get started. Its clearly the best system ever made and holds the best gaming library to date. DC is also a way to go.

Have you looked into the Atari Lynx? It's a portable system, but it lived during the time period you're interested in. It has a small library compared to some other systems, but several of the games are quite good. Many of the games in the Lynx library are ports of arcade games that were popular during that time.

Wha? No way. I have an Amiga 500, 600, and 1200. And you can't get 75% of the games for other systems, including the PC. Only a few companies ported thier games over to other platforms.

I agree with those that said the Dreamcast. For one thing, the prices of Colecovisions and games seem to be high right now. The prices for Dreamcast stuff on Ebay is very very low! I would jump on it now before the prices start going back up, which they will. But the stuff you get now, for cheap, will be worth more later for the fact that the system was so short lived.

5 pounds for a Dreamcast? Sure it works?

If so I'd grab that baby. The Dreamcast has some of the best games ever available for it, especially if you love fighters!

    Check out:
    Mr Driller
    Bangioh (sp?)
    Ikaruga
    Chu Chu Rocket
    Rez

For some of my facourite games. Can't go wrong with an NES or SMS either.

Though you can't lose with an NES. So many classics...
I go online sometimes, but ... everyone's spelling is really bad, and it's ... depressing.
