Default What is your expectations for next gen Grand Theft Auto?

Well, XBOX 360 is coming on November 15th and the PS3 next Xmas (maybe spring in Japan, but U.S. ? not likely).

So you would have to imagine that the team behind Grand Theft Auto is working on their next gen version. The XBOX 360 is getting a game called "Saint's Row", which is another GTA ripoff, but with absolutely mind blowing graphics. So, I certainly don't think that "Saint's Row" is going to be the dominating game in this genre, but it's an attempt to steal GTA's lunch. You know when the GTA team first saw Saint's Row, that had to make them that much more focused on making a next gen GTA that will blow everything out of the water.

Another question that has to be asked, is will Microsoft open their wallet to try to get a GTA game on 360 before the PS3 hits? Rockstar has always worked out deals with Sony, but now that we are entering the new generation, they might want to throw it out there to the highest bidder. Microsoft has a tremendous amount of cash, and if it could have a brand new version of GTA on the 360, before the PS3 is even available in the U.S., that would be a huge move for them. A very expensive move, but huge nonetheless.

Of course, Sony doesn't want Rockstar going anywhere. The fact that they've always had GTA first, for a 7 month window, has been one of the key reasons that they never had a chance of falling into second place in the current generation. Sony knows that if they can maintain the same agreement in the next generation, that it will be a huge ace in the hole for them. Possibly "the" ace in the hole that could even win them a huge initial market share.

So it will definitely be interesting to see what happens to the next version of GTA. You have to assume that the next gen version will be the first official version of GTA 4.

As for what I'm expecting from the game? Well, basically the only thing that the GTA series really needs is to finally be on system with ridiculous power. As Chancellor Palpatine would say, "U N L I M I T E D P O W E R!!!".

There is no question that whether the next GTA finds itself on the XBOX 360 or PS3, that the power of those systems will allow the developers to fully realize their vision.

We are going to see the first GTA, that is designed with widescreen TV's in mind. The first GTA that is designed with HDTV in mind. The first GTA that is designed with Dolby Digital 5.1 in mind. Sure, the XBOX version of San Andreas that just came out features a widescreen mode, 480p support and Dolby Digital 5.1, but the game wasn't designed with those features in mind. It was ported over to take "some" advantage of those features. It will be a totally new ballgame when they are designing the new versions.

From a visuals standpoint, I'm looking for the driving sequences to have the graphical quality of Need For Speed: Most Wanted. I'm looking for the interior of buildings and such, to have the graphical quality of a next gen Riddick. Sound quality should be top notch, because the developers will be designing the game with on the fly 5.1 decoding in mind.

As for gameplay, the GTA series has that in spades already. That has always been the strong point of the game. The power of the next gen systems could allow them to make their GTA world even larger, more impressive and more accurate. That could open up some new gameplay possibilities.

And of course the big thing that everybody has been dreaming about is GTA Online. So we should se some online multiplayer action for the very first time. I'm just hoping that it will support 32 or more players, to give you the feel of being in this real, interactive city with people all over the place.

I guess we will just have to wait and see. Probably won't see anything about this game till e3 2006.

For GTA 4 I would Like to see.

-More mini-games than San Andreas had.
-More sim like experince than San Andreas Had.
-More area to go around in.
    -More Crimes to Commit.
-Better Ability to live on the right side of the Law.
-More Cars, weapons, and other things.

    And Most Importantly

-A REVOLUTION VERSION (Or whatever Nintendo calls their Next Gen System).

    1. I want to see it set in the 70s in Las Vegas.

    2. I would like to see the story go back to gangsters instead of "gangstas".

    3. I would like to be able to understand what the characters say without learning ebonics.

Damn that would be cool. Like straight out of the movie "Casino"...

That seems lik a likely choice of subject matter.

Indeed. What better backdrop for GTA then a mafia controlled "Sin City". Just thinking of all the amazing things they could do with the neon lights at night... wow! And if they take stuff from "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas" they could implement stuff like the desert races and the crazy carnival. Perhaps the owner could hire you to do that crazy motorcycle ring thing.

I would like to see them flip the script. (that was for Promophile)

I would like to play as a cop in the GTA world and try and take down all the gangs in the game. Start out as a rookie going through police academy and work your way up to detective, something like Mackey on The Shield.

I think they will again go with whoever has the biggest user base. So, if they are readying the next version for around the time of the PS3's launch, it will probably also be on 360 also since it will have a bigger user base at that point because of having been out longer.

I'm not sure that the graphics are going to be what you're expecting. GTA has always had kind of a cartoony look to it, hasn't it? Not that they will be bad or anything, but I don't think they are striving for a realistic look like other games.

Well, to me San Andreas has a very realistic look to it, just on some seriously underpowered hardware. I mean, it looks as close to Compton as possible on PS2 hardware.

I hope they get fast speed traffic right. It's fun standing on the side of the Julius Thruway and watching everyone crash into each other, but it's pretty annoying trying to drive on it without someone slamming into you.

I'd also like to see the ability to stack vehicles onto other vehicles, so you could drive a vehicle onto a Packer and it wouldn't slide off, or you could carry your bike in a pickup truck.

It would also be cool if the lead character were female the next time around - think of a sexy, confident girl that knows what she wants and will do anything to get it. Imagine getting into a fist fight with some chick you just crashed into and she would say "yeah, bring it on bitch."

Yeah, I'm racist, because all black people are gangstas that talk in ebonics and love rap, right? Thats odd, because I have many good friends who happen to be black but know how to speak the English language. I'm sick and tired of going through fast food drive thrus and not being able to understand what the hell the workers, be they black or white, are saying because they're too "hood" to pronounce words correctly. I deal with that enough in real life, so yes I didn't like that aspect of San Andreas, but I also understand the game couldn't have been made in the setting it was without it. But I guess since hiphop culture is dominated by African Americans anything negative I say about it makes me racist, huh?

    I want better damned control....

For the driving, I want GT4-caliber physics.

If I have a gun drawn, I want selectable first-person, and I want to be able to LOCK it in FP. Not just when I'm standing still and aiming, but I'm talking a real FPS mode, but it'd play MUCH more realistically, like maybe Counterstrike or Rainbow Six.

I want ENDLESSLY destructible environments. If I have to rob a bank, I want to be able to decide to blow the vault from the room underneath, the room next door, or crash a plane into it. I'm not just talking about a few options here and there, I mean bottom-up construction of a completely destructible gameworld.

I want ongoing investigations of crimes. I want to have to watch myself, keep an eye out for the Feds, I want stakeouts, wiretaps, ambushes, etc... They need to be on the lookout for me before I blow up the damned ambulance if I already blew one up yesterday.

Notice I haven't even MENTIONED graphics?

My biggest beefs are really just the driving and shooting though, the current control sucks ass. Fix that and I'm happy.

I like most of what the GTA series has done so far. I think what will put them over the top is MMOGTA.

For example when you log on you have an apartment, you can:
    A. Join a gang, or start one.

    B. Take over territory; for example having hookers work for you, as well as drug dealers, and casinos.

    C. Be ranked amongst everyone else in the world based on the territory you control.

Set it in 1920s Chicago/Detroit/Windsor, where you play a booze runner during prohibition.

I would adore a non-GTA game with the old-school gangsters and / or casino setting. A mostly indoor, casino setting GTA-ish thing would be just totally awesome.

I really enjoy casinos and gambling, as well as hearing about old timey gangsters Godfather style. I think the GTA style of play could work like that really well, and it would make me interested in the series, which I really haven't been for a while.

And I'm sorry if that makes me a "racist" Anthony1 (which a lot of my friends would find odd), but those themes would be a lot more interesting to me. Why did you ask others what they think the game should be like if you don't want to hear them?

That was a TOTAL bullshit response. Speaking proper English and expecting others to make an effort to do the same does NOT make you a racist. Jumping to a conclusion like this does in fact make you a jackass however.

Interesting how you saw the word ghetto and you thought of black people - he didn't mention african americans at all....

Reminds me of that south park episode where chef is so pissed because the logo is a bunch of white stick figures hanging a black stick figure. Then he realizes they didn't see a black person that was being hung, they just a person - so then he was ok with the violence. =)

It's obviously the stereotype, but whatever in the environment I'm in (suburbs) I see white thugs w/something to prove wayyyyy more - back to the topic though.

I also would like to see some of the italians (yes, the stereotypical gangsters) back on the strip. And to keep it authentic they need to allow you to torture people just like they did. Not just shooting them (weak).

That means hanging people from meat hooks, using blow torches on their sexual organs, and peeling the skin off their body with razor blades until they die from shock.

And when you do a hit and do shoot them, you have to do special requests based on why they're being whacked - like cutting their hands off (means you violated security) or shooting them in their mouth (means you were talking to the feds).

Some different carrers would be really cool. You could be ganster, cop, medic, pilot or something else.
Also I'd like to see a better police AI. Get a sniper rifle and a Bazooka in Vice City and climb on a roof - you'll be able to kill endless streams of cops.
