    Default PS2 Back Compatability Problem

So, I bought a shiny copy of Dune 2000, and since my PS1 isn't hooked up, I decided to play it on my PS2. The weird thing is the intro movie was really choppy. I mean, like, it was not right. I was curious, so I tried a few other PS1 games, and they all worked fine.

My guess (and this is only a guess) is the PS1 emulator (if there is such a thing on the PS2, I'm not sure how it works actually) simulates the PS1 hardware, but takes up so much PS2 memory (processing power?) that it slows down on bigger movie type scenes.

I am curious if others have experienced this, or similar issues? Does anyone know what's going on here?

There are a handfull of PS1 games that are not fully supported on the PS2, I'm sure another DPer will have the full list, Dune 2000 may be one of the games that has problems.

I'm pretty sure that the PS2 does not use an emulator, btw.

The PS2 uses the original PS1 CPU to play PS1 titles (the chip also serves as an I/O controller i think).

& here it is, according to Game Informer #94:

    -Arcade Party Pak
-Arcade Greatest Hits: Atari Coll. 2 (Paperboy)
    -Fighter Maker
    -Final Fantasy Anthology
    -Internat'l Track & Field
    -Judge Dredd
    -Monkey Hero
    -Mortal Kombat Trilogy
    -Tomba!

Also, I've seen games do goofy things when the "disc speed" or smoothing functions are on. For example, Dino Crisis runs on PS2, but when I had "disc speed" on fast, there were graphical glitches.

I coulda sworn that the list was a little bigger than that (about 12-15 games). I'm pretty sure that Wing Commander 3 as well as Tomba! 2 also have play issues. I havnt heard about Dune 2000 messing up before. What model is your PS2?

Wow, I've already learned a lot from you guys here. tHanks. I'm not sure what model my PS2 is. I'm at work right now, so I can't check. But, it isn't a slim model, and I bought it in 2002. So, that might be slightly helpful.

I do remember getting a scrambled screen one time while trying to save a game on Final Fantasy V. Heard that happens once in awhile. As for Mortal Kombat Trilogy, I haven't noticed any problems when playing in on my PS2.

Older list I've seen also mentioned several Namco Museum titles that had issues.

That list is old. I've had Final Fantasy Anthology since day one and it works fine in my PS2. So does Wing Commander 3.

Could it just be some models of PlayStation 2's?

    You forgot about The Japanese Only Gradius 1 & 2 ( PS1 Vergon ) .

I've never had a problem playing a PS1 game on my PS2, including Arcade Party Pak and the Midway Atari Collection. I don't have any of that bonus stuff turned on (don't even know how to do it to be honest).

Maybe, but I've had problems with FF5 everytime I've played it on a PS2. It doesn't affect the entire game- just when you go to the save game screen. I'd say about 75% of the time you'll get a glitched up screen and you'll have to exit the menu and try again.

Also, the cutscenes in Chrono Cross stutter like crazy on a PS2, but only if you set the PS1 options to fast & smooth.

I just bought Dino Crisis for like $1 and the analog stick on my PS2 controller does not function. And this is without the texture mapping\ disc speed enhancements on. Anybody else have this problem?

I only wrote what I saw in GI. Thought it might help. I saw the same list in a subsequent issue of EGM. I guess it's an early/preliminary list like someone said- dont blame me for un/listed games!!!

AFA Atari Coll. 2, I personally know Paperboy is the only game on the disc that screws up (for me.)

On Arcade Party Pak, for me Toobin was the only game that didnt work. This after a GameStop clerk reassured me the whole thing works on PS2, & Toobin was the only game I bought it for!

The only game I've ever had a problem with, besides a couple of the ones listed, is Thunder Force V. There's also a larger list of non-compatible games in one of the GameFAQs hardware faqs.

I couldn't get Grand Theft Auto: London or Felony 11-79 to work on my PS2.

I was kind of pissed because it took me forever to find Felony 11-79 in the wild -- it was one of my favorite PS1 games and it would tease me by getting to the loading screen and then just sitting there.

I don't know about WC3, but I haven't had any noticable play issues with Tomba! 2 personally.

Oh, look! It's my first proper post to the forums...

The only problems I've personally come across so far (on my UK machine) have been PAL Monkey Hero and some of PAL Party Pack. I did experience a problem with Un Jammer Lammy going out of sync to the point of being unplayable but I'm not sure if that was the disk or the machine.

Hopefully PS3 will handle with the few unplayable PS1 titles.

...oh, look! That was my first proper post to the forums!
