Default Which Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past version is best?

Believe it or not, I have never played The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past. Well, that's not entirely true. One night in college, I played it in emulation until I got to the dark world, but then I never touched it again.

So, I now find myself wanting to play it and I have two versions:
    The original SNES version
    The GBA version

Ignoring the four swords part of the GBA version, which is the better to play? Does the bigger screen area of the SNES version favor it? Are there updates in the GBA version that make it better?

Also, ignore that one is portable and one isn't - that isn't a factor for me (though I don't have a Gamecube and Gameboy Player, so I would be playing the GBA version on my SP).

    Please advise away!

Never played Zelda 3?!??!?! That's like never having kissed a girl, never having seen the sunset, never having tasted something very tasty, well you get the picture...Go for the SNES version on the big screen.

There's a list somewhere with all the differences between the two versions. A few bugs were fixed, a couple of puzzles made easier, the ability to get to a certain later dungeon before tackling the one before it was sorted and so on. Doesn't Link make sounds in the GBA version too?

Personally I'd go for the original version if you can find a proper copy of it. Nice map too

The little yelp that Link makes when swinging the sword in the GBA version drives me NUTS.

I would go with the original personally. I personally think that the origanal stuff is a little better or nicer.

Original, because as soon as they gave Link his kiddie voice from OoT, that really killed the mood of the game...
These cartridges are dirty as hell and I'm not going to take it anymore!

while the gba version is technically superior and has some different content. i prefer the original snes version just because of the big screen. it looks so smooth and beautiful on the tv (assuming you are NOT using an RF). it is one of the best looking snes games out there.

beat it on snes first, then gba in your spare time (yeah. its that good)

best zelda out there. followed closely by Link's Awakening.

Arrrgh. It didn't drive me nuts, but it was a little irritating at times. That's why I voted for the SNES version (that and the controls; plus, originals are almost always best in ways that are difficult to explain).

Definitely SNES version. Why? Four face buttons. Makes quite a difference in that game.

It's nice that the GBA version has the 4 Swords game and some additional sounds.

BUT - I voted for the SNES version.

The screen aspect ratio is proportionately larger for the SNES. but most importantly, the SNES sound chip still trumps the GBA sound chip, there's something about SNES sound that gets me every time - and it stomps the GBA.

Try comparing Rockman & Forte / Megaman & Bass from console to portable in regards to sound, you'll notice a big difference.

And the SNES version in RGB is the best way to go.

I know that I make tons and tons of RGB topics, but when it comes to game as beautifull as Link to the Past, this is the kinda game that really shows off RGB gaming to the fullest.

Games like Link to the Past are true masterpieces and works of art. Miyamoto might one day be considered similar to Mozart. So you should view his work of art on the best canvas possible.

    Eeeegh.

Anyhow, the GBA version has good graphics and you can play it on the go, but the screen's smaller. You can't really tell, though.

Oh, and I'm still mad at Nintendo for including Four Swords but not letting me play it. I don't have two (plus) fuckin' carts and GBAs

Ewww...they added a voice to this game as well?

The voices totally ruined SMB2 for me.

I would recommend playing both games

The Snes version is great can't beat the original

but also the gba version is amazing as well, so it really depends

Alright, so general consensus is the SNES version so I'll get to that. (Have to beat Super Punch-Out first, though, as that's my current game).

And no RGB for me. I'll have to settle for S-Video.

I'll have to vote for the SNES version. You're going to be hard pressed finding any game better than this. I've been playing video games since '79, have over 20 systems, and have played 1,000's of games, and I put it in the top five games of all-time. Maybe even the top 3.

Yeah, in my opinion, the only games better were Ys: Book I and II (Turbo Grafx CD), and Phantasy Star (SMS). But now that I'm looking back, it may be even better than PS.
