I believe nintendo started using the extra grey cases that they had left over towards the end of the gameboy color's life. Why make new cases up when you have all these pretty gray ones left over still?

Looks it to me. I'd wait for someone elses reply though, I'm not an overly great judge of thatI just know I've seen legit gameboy color carts in grey cases before.
