SNES Mario Paint: Mouse Pad Question

Simple Question
Does Mario Paint require the Mouse Pad to work..?

All I have is the cart and mouse..

If it is required can I use something else..?..or nothing..

I guess I could anser this myself by just hooking it up..But I figure I'd get a quicker answer here..

It's just like a computer mouse with the roller ball and everything.

The mouse pad itself was just a large piece of plastic.

It should work without it.
