the answer is not to far away from where you posted.
All my meseta if you can guess what CMTZ stands for.
It does not require the update...the game comes with an update to 1.5. As you look through the game, you notice the abundance of Japanese writing in the backgrounds.
My opinion: Coded Arms US is simply the Japanese version with a few tweaks here and there and the firmware update was simply left on the UMD during the translation process.
