4x4 Evo 2 is my favorite game in the genre and my top recommendation. There's a huge selection of vehicles to choose from and the levels and courses are huge. Along with the racing, there's also a mode where you do missions instead of racing to earn extra cash - you'll have to cruise around an area trying to find something, checking your map to see where it's located. The career mode is really deep - I've probably spent more time with the game than a lot of people here, and I still have a lot of races left. The game does have its flaws - the AI of other racers could be better and you can only own four trucks at a time - but for the time being, it's the only game that comes close to being the Gran Turismo of off-road racing.

I'm playing through Test Drive Off-Road: Wide Open right now. Think of it as a cross between 4x4 Evo and Smuggler's Run. It's developed by the same people who did Smuggler's Run, Angel Studios (now Rockstar San Diego). There's a decent selection of trucks to choose from, ranging from stock to highly-modified versions. There are only three areas to roam, but they are huge and you will race on a good number of different courses in each one. It's not as good as 4x4 Evo 2, but I'm still enjoying it.

Paris-Dakar Rally was awful - avoid it. Fortunately, DAKAR 2: The World's Ultimate Rally was a much improved sequel and I recommend that instead. It's a little on the short side, though.

    Hope that helps!

Although not the entire focus of the game is dedicated to "off-road", Gran Turismo 4's rally races are great, and the game overall is the best racing simulator on the PS2. The only negative is that the price point is still holding out at $49.99, prehaps what for a drop and buy Super Offroad for $3 to play on your Nintendo to tide you over.

I think I only liked Super Off Road in the genre. If you count rally games as off-road then I also liked Sega Rally, but that's it for me.

Don't forget to check out my MAMExpose article about "buggy" games -- there are some good offroad games listed in there as well!

I really like Rallisport Challenge 2...it's more arcade feeling than many racers and has some exaggerated physics (which can make for some spectacular crashes), but it's got a huge variety of race types and a lot of tracks.

Similiarly, you may be interested in the Colin McRae games on Xbox (3, 4, 2005). Unlike Rallisport, these are hardcore sim types. Very realistic handling and physics, but very fun. They lack the variety of Rallisport, but they make up for it in realism.

Not really an off road game, but Racing Gears Advance for the GBA has the same feel as RC pro-am. I've been working at it for a couple weeks now and I can't seem to put it down.
