Default Super Mario Bros. 2: Lost Level on NES!

I've seen Famicom boots of this sell for $60+ on eBay.. and I got this bad boy for $6. I know that NES boots are fairly uncommon as is (well, at least in the US and especially compared to Famicom bootlegs) so I'm just wondering what a proper resell of this could go for. Any ideas?

By the way.. one thing I was curious about was the on the disk version you had to beat the game eight times in order to access level A-D and I knew pirates never included a battery (nor did I think they'd even know how to convert the saving features of a disk game to a cart). Well, lucky for me the game starts off as if you've beaten it eight times (with eight stars on the title screen).

This is my best find in a long time! Yay!

    Zelda is NOT an RPG.

Its most likely the version that crashes after you beat the final palace (when it tries to save to the fds disk)

It's just a generic SuperVision cart if you've seen those before.

I have a Famicom Pirate version of SMB 2 Japan, and this is exactly what it does. The screen turns black and it makes a humming noise after you beat the game. Oh well, it is still pretty fun up until that point!
I would say your cart is worth around $50 or so. It really depends what other games are on it as well. Very cool pick up either way!

Holy shit. I want one of these. I don't care if it crashes at the end of the game.

Semi-OT, but in the SMB DX version of The Lost Levels on the GBC, are levels A-D available by doing the same thing you had to do as in the FDS version? I only ever rented SMB DX, and I was disappointed to find that they weren't in there. Either way, I've really got to get the game for myself one of these days.

Your best bet is to buy one from one of the guys on this site that makes Reproductions. Pirate carts that have SMB 2 Japan on them having been going for ALOT on Ebay lately. I bought mine less than a year ago for $1+shipping. It was listed as just Super Mario Brothers, and I guess no one else noticed it (lucky me!). The last pirate SMB2J I saw went for $66. You can sometimes find them on Ebay.uk for a little less though. Good luck

Those games are so common here, I could sell tons of them and I´d be rich

The one I have has a level select included.
Step Back! This is my blast shot!

I just don't know what it is, the insane challenge or the fact it's been ignored for so many years....This underdog of the Mario series will always be my favorite!

I have a repro of SMB2J and it really sucks having to beat the game 8 times in a row without powering off in order to play A to D. I wonder if there is a dump out there that starts you out with the 8 stars but doesn't hang at the ending. Or, alternatively, a way for the makers of reproductions to rig a battery to the PCB that will save the number of stars you have on power off. Hmmm, this requires some further investigation...

It will take more than one post for sure to get to stick in a groups mind before something like it is tackled my friend.

Well, let's see. Does yours crash when you beat it? If not, it'd probably be pretty easy to hack the ROM it was based on to start with eight stars and then use that modified ROM for further reproductions.

I think we should actually look into doing this. I love my little find but I wouldn't mind having a version that I could play all 13 worlds on and not crash.. not to mention having a better label, hehe.

That actually brings up a good topic

There are some gameplay issues between Mario All-Stars and the original SMB2.

One problem I always face is the first stage, you hit the block, and you have to get the mushroom..normally in the original Famicom verison, you just hit the next block, and it jumps over for you to catch it.

Yet in the SNES verison, you have to time exactly when to hit the block to make sure it hits over.

I can't really remember what other advantages/disadvantages the two had. I just like contrasting and comparing ports from time to time

If you love it so much, why did you sell your GBA version to me?

Just to let you know, I've gotten 3 stars on the title screen thus far. I'd like to get all 8, but I can't seem to pass World 6 anymore.

-The revamped "Americanized/mainstream" graphics suck (IMHO)
-Warpzones and 1ups are moved around
-you can save anywhere eliminating ALL of the challenge of the game (which is the major draw for me)
-Death mushroom is too obvious eliminating it as a gameplay component.
-It's not the real deal (why don't you just tell me to use emulation while you're at it? This thread is about SMB2J, not the inferior "Lost-Levels" version)
...yes, I know that sounded pissy but I hate when people say "why not play this or that updated version?" If I wanted to, I would!

Anyway, my repro works perfectly through both endings, and the wind works properly on every wind level (the other major problem with most pirates/hacks). I think all that would need to be done is to change a couple of bytes around in the ROM to adjust the starting star count from zero to eight on startup. Can anyone do this or should I start PMing the repro guys?

I have a Famicom Pirate of SMB2j I bought form a DP member for $50. I've gotta say, I've never seen one on ebay or anywhere else....strange. I didn't even think they were that common. And on my official disk version, I don't believe I ever had to go through it 8 times to get A-D...I'm pretty sure, anyway.
