Default Mod Chips Mod Chips Mod Chips! (and other stuff)

I'm just being a weenie and wanted to see if Joe would lock this one too...

Just out of curiosity, wasn't there a way to play imports WITHOUT a mod chip? I thought there was something you could do with a gameshark or something like that.

Of course what I would like to add is whether the country you're in or the country you get the mod chip from determines if it's "illegal"? Because not everywhere thinks the same way the US does... remember this ruling from last year?

If manufacturers didn't region code, then there would be an easy distinction. But they gotta have their staggered releases and ways to screw over the consumer price wise...

Yeah, you can play imports using a Gameshark.

You can either go buy one of those flip-top cases for your PS2, or you can cut off the lid on the motorized door.

All you have to do is put in the Gameshark disc, then go to "start game". Once you do that, all you have to do is replace the Gameshark with the import without triggering the door-opening mechanism. If you buy a flip-top case for the PS2 (I think they're US$20), just flip the lid, and replace the disc. If you chose to take off the door of the motorized tray, you can either jiggle the Gameshark disc out, and jiggle the import game in (not recommended. that's the easiest way to scratch the poop out of your games), or you can use a paper clip to manually unlock the tray (the lock is on the left side of the opening), and replace the disc that way.

All the options above works, and I suggest buying the $20 flip-top case. The other options work, but make both your system and games look trashy.

And this works with PS1 imports as well? Why would people bother with mod chips then? Isn't the CD spinning though? How would you take it out then?

See, another reason the Dreamcast is so damn...

When I got Ikaruga I was concerned that I wasn't going to be able to play imports without some kinda hardware mod. Little did I know all I would need was the ever handy utopia boot disc for this. One more thing that makes Sega kicks ass!!!

but then your paying $30 for a new ps2 3rd party case and 50+ for a game shark that you now can't use to cheat..

It's just best to get a no swap chip for under $40.. It's more useful and cost effective and less damaging to your system..

Why wouldn't you still be able to use it to cheat? Are you talking about cheating on import games? Bah who cares about that...

If you use a game shark to 1)play imports with a swap or 2) Play backups with a swap you will not be able to use it to cheat in games, it will be set up to just do those two things, and it's a real pain to do.

Trust me if you got any sort of soldering skills go with a chip.
