Default Crazed woman threatens me at auction!

Here’s a real horror story about the dangers of video game collecting…

I went to my first and last public auction yesterday. A pawn closed down near my job went out of business, and the owner was selling off all of its assets. The pawn happened to be across the street from my office, and there were a lot of games that I had been interested in buying, but the prices were always too high. Everything was split up into lots for the auction, so you had a chance to look at every lot to make sure that you were interested in its contents.

I should also state, for the purposes of this story, that this is a small country town. Not all of Virginia is rural, but there are farms nearby in this particular local area.

I waited for almost 5 hours for them to call up the game items (they were all listed in the 300’s, and the total number of lots went into the 400’s). I had only written down 5 lots that I was interested in, and I won 2 of those, but I’m not even sure it was worth it.

After I won my second lot, a lady who was sitting with her husband and son realized that she had missed the bidding for it. She must not have looked at the picture on the screen because she didn’t even bid against me. No one else did, either. I must also add here that she had bid against me on other lots of game stuff that I considered to be unimportant (3 yellowed SNES consoles with no cords, a lot full of loose Genesis consoles, and a box full of cords).

I should also add here that the woman and her husband had won a shotgun at the same auction only a few hours earlier...

When she found out that she had forgotten to bid against me on the second lot I won, she became enraged. She yelled, “If I’m not getting them damn PlayStation 2 games, I’m not paying for any of this s***!” Then, she batted a few of the folding chairs around, knocking them over. The auctioneer stopped calling for a moment, and he yells, “Lady, calm down, everybody out here is trying to get good deals!” She told him to shut up and she started shrieking at the top of her lungs. Then, she walked over to her son and said, “You little s***! I’ve been out here for 4 hours because of you and them damn games!” (Maybe I should also mention that this woman and her husband were rednecks, probably the gun-rack owning, Confederate-flag loving types. It’s weird because the husband had a glazed look in his eyes, like he had just finished a Mason jar full of moonshine.) She shrieked and knocked over more chairs and then ran off.

A few minutes later, she runs over to me while the bidding is still happening. She tells me that I am going to give her those PS2 games. I told her that she needed to back off or I was going to pull out my cellphone and dial 911. I reminded her about her previous behavior and all the witnesses that were standing out there who saw her lose it. She told me that she and her husband would be waiting for me after I paid for my lots.

When I went inside through the back door to pay, I told the people inside that she had threatened me and that everybody saw her go nuts after she missed her opportunity to bid. Then, I told them that they were either going to let me out the front door or I would call the police to have them escort me out safely. I told them that I hadn’t come to their auction to deal with this kind of crap and that they should have had adequate security. When I turned around, the crazy woman was coming through the back door. A lady who happened to be the pawn owner’s wife let me pay and take my boxes out the front door. The crazed redneck woman was shouting something as I ran out the door.

I quickly ran across the street with two full boxes of videogames. My car was parked in my company’s parking lot, so I dashed around the corner. I threw the boxes into the passenger seat, got in on the driver’s side and sped the hell off. I must have done 40 mph on a residential street to get out of there. I swear I heard the fast part of “Dueling Banjos” playing in the back of my head all the way down the highway…

Anyway, here are the contents of the 2 lots I risked my life for:

    Lot 1 - $10
Einhander (PS1, complete) – this is why I wanted the lot since both Gamestop and EB sell this game for $29.99 used

I’m more pissed that I missed my chance to bid on a Turbo-Grafx 16 system because I wanted to live…

I'm sorry to hear that, man...the lady couldn't even offer to BUY the lot from you? Sheesh.

Here's hoping you're able to find a better, less psycho-prone auction some day.

Thank you for reading. I had nightmares about that crazy woman last night, and I didn't even want to touch a controller for the rest of the evening last night. I'm over that now...

    OMFG !

I told her that she needed to back off or I was going to pull out my cellphone and dial 911. I reminded her about her previous behavior and all the witnesses that were standing out there who saw her lose it.
    Great reaction!

Its pretty funny and scary at the same time,i would todally be freaked if some lady started chasing me over a box of video games, ive actally had that happen on ebay before, some guy got pissed off because i had a faster connection than him and won by .50, so he emails me and is cursing me out,i then added him to my blocked addresses and signed him up for Coolsavings cupons. I wonder if he got a deal on that game, with deals on pamper diapers,a free credit card, you push yes for free houses, Anyway great story man and remember, she will probaly step on a disc or that broken PSP that those Jap Kids smashed.

Why didnt you just dial 911, i wouldnt have let her get away with that. Threatening violence over some videogames is just pathetic.

Okay...I'm thinking music video here...yes, to the tune of "Dueling Banjos"

-At the start, we see the auction getting set up, and people are coming in.
-Josekortez looks at the clock and gets up from his office chair...

ehh...it's hard to write out, but if you get a copy of the song, listen to it as you read the posting...like "The Wizard of Oz" to "Darkside of the Moon" it fits.

Off-topic, can anybody tell me what system those unidentifiable portable games are for? Any help would be appreciated...

Your scenario would work, rayearthknight, except for the fact that I was off on Saturday. Truthfully, I don't even shop near my job because of the large amount of slack-jawed yokels who inhabit this particular town...

And thanks for the help on the unidentifiable carts.

Why didn't you simply shut her down? I would never let someone threaten me into leaving early. My typical MO would be to calmly ask her to justify her position, then point out the inconsistencies in a professorial manner. This never fails to absolutely piss off the aggressor, and eventually they see the light and get "angryembarrassed", at which point they essentially run away.

Before Wavelflack tries to turn this into an "Is josekortez a b****" thread, let's remember two important points here:

    1. She had bid on and paid for a shotgun a few hours earlier.

    2. Video games aren't worth dying over.

    Just...wow.

Remember, we live in a world where a guy like Scott Petersen can kill his wife and unborn child, get sent to prison for life, and actually receives invitations from women who want to marry him.

It shouldn't be too surprising then that there are people who think they are entitled to be simply given things at auctions that they didn't even bid on despite their ignorance but their the "virtue" of their inconvenience.

Bingo. If I had a wife like this chances are good I'd be finding my refuge in the corn squeezins as well

    3. No doubt, there are shells in thier vehicle

    4. Sometimes, you can't talk sense to some people...ever tried to have a professional conversation (what?) about classic videogames to a 9 year old? Most of time what you say will go over thier heads...and they'll STILL say that Pac Man is stupid.

Oh, I don't plan on calling you a bitch.

I just don't think I would have felt concerned for my safety in that situation. In fact, I think I would have relished the confrontation. Now, if the guy started loading the shotgun and waving it in a threatening manner, I would drop the smartass highbrow routine and look into a more robust solution.

I dunno. Maybe it's just the dickhead inside of me. I used to sell cars, and had to do repo and collection work sometimes. I liked it. I liked facing down fucking idiots who thought they could intimidate me into some kind of concession. I enjoyed defeating their plans to evade "justice"--parking the car next to their chained up pit bulls (buy bag of $.89 hamburgers on the way to repo, toss hamburgers to dogs while getting into car, snicker loudly as you drive away), etc.

Maybe you took the wiser route. It's certainly the less satisfying route, though!
