I wonder if it was a legit bid.

I also wonder if the high bidder would be able to successfully fight for his money back if the guy was caught. After all, the purchase price is for the act of making it onto the field and advertising the product. If the person was caught before making in onto the field then technically he would have failed to deliver what he adversised.
