Default Peter Jackson to be executive producer on Halo movie

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - Peter Jackson and Fran Walsh, the creative duo behind the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy and the upcoming "King Kong," will serve as executive producers of a movie based on Microsoft's blockbuster "Halo" video game.

Universal Pictures and 20th Century Fox, the companies behind the project, hope to be in production in the spring with an eye for a summer 2007 worldwide release. No director is attached, though one is expected to come aboard shortly.

Jackson and Walsh will give creative input on all aspects of the film via their WingNut Films banner. Jackson's New Zealand-based Weta companies will provide creatures, miniatures and visual effects for the production.

Should they even be making a Halo movie? Seems like all video-game based movies suck?

Before we get all excited, typically an executive producer is not involved in the creative or technical aspects of the film, so what does giving "creative input on all aspects of the film via their WingNut Films banner" mean?

I may be skeptical, but I smell some publicity money being thrown around here to give this film some credibility that video gaming movies don't normally have (often rightly so).

I never considered Halo worth to be changed into a movie! 90min of shooting aliens? We already had that in ST.

That's because 99% of them are directed by Uwe Boll. Thank God he didn't get Halo.

    BTW, who did Doom?

This is nothing more than PR babble. If he was actually the Director, then I would be pretty impressed.

You know who they should get to direct it?

Of course as I understand it, this means they get access to Jackson's special effects group, which, as we all saw from LOTR, is pretty damn good.

Doom is being directed by this fellow . His past work as director, and the crummy trailer don't inspire confidence, but let's face it, he's got to be better than Uwe Boll. I can't work out if he should be stopped from making films or actively encouraged, just so I can see how low he can get. I await Bloodrayne with baited breath...

But yeah, untill we see who's directing Halo I'm not getting excited. Sam Raimi - good director, produced some utter crap in his time.

I'd say most of you didn't even read the story. This isn't just some PR babble or to give the film some legitimacy.

Although his effects houses have been overrun for the past eight years with the "Lord of the Rings" and "King Kong" movies, Jackson had always hoped that other filmmakers would use their expertise. Universal approached Jackson about "Halo," unaware that he was a huge fan of the game. His excitement led him and Walsh to become "creative godfathers" on the film, allowing them to be involved creatively while also securing a major assignment for his studios.

"As a gaming fan, I'm excited to bring 'Halo's' premise, action and settings to the screen with all the specificity and reality today's technology can provide," Jackson said. "Fran and I are intrigued by the unique challenges this project offers, and we're delighted to be working again with our friends at Universal, and with our new ones at Fox and Microsoft. I'm a huge fan of the game and look forward to helping it come alive on the cinema screen."

I'm going to see Doom. It actually looks like it will be decent.
Halo movie, well just how are they going to make the Master cheif apeal to everyone. He's going to be the main character that you never see. And I dunno about you guys, but watching MC run around and do missions for 2 hours might not be that fun.

I guess it all depends on how they are gonna tell this story. Are they gonna make this a trilogy, and have one dedicated to the backstory etc? I dunno, but I'll wait to pass judgement until I see a trailer of some sort.

Maybe so, but did you see "Showgirls"? Also directed by your beloved Paul Verhoeven. Seriously, how can someone who directed Starship Troopers, Robocop and Total Recall do a movie like Showgirls?

Actually Doom is being directed by Andrzej Bartkowiak. He's directed a couple of decent movies including:

    - Thriteen Days
    - US Marshalls
    - The Devil's Advocate
    - Species
    - Speed
    - Falling Down
    - Twins
    - Terms of Endearment

He's an ok director and should do a good job, but the writer is the one that should be crucified here.

Oh and 99% of all bad VG movies aren't done by Uwe Boll. He's only done Alone in the Dark and House of the dead. SUre he's bastardized Blood Rayne and he's gonna bastardize many other games, but to be fair we should remember other great failures like James Yukich, who directed Double Dragon: The Movie, and John R. Leonetti, who made the craptacular Mortal Kombat: Annihilation.

Oh and Paul W.S. Anderson deserves special credit because he did and amazing job with Mortal Kombat, but then fucked up and rejected a Resident Evil script penned by the legendary George A. Romero (Available here, in favor of the crap they shot.

The reason VG movies are so bad is because they people making them aren't familar with the properties and they try to over cheese it. Or they're just arrogant morons like Uwe Boll.
