Default Why didn't nintendo make a gold cart for the SNES Zelda?

Just about each edition of Zelda has a gold cart or special disc for it, but why didn't Nintendo make one for the SNES version which became a players choice games real quick?

    You get the picture...

Maybe because the label of the game was already gold? Or perhaps spray paint for those cartridges was more expensive than for the NES games.

In Europe also the N64 OOT was grey (Australia got a gold one), also GB titles are just grey carts. Don't know why and I can't care about it.

Well, Zero, sharp doesn't care, so that's the end of it.

Seriously, they probably just said, "fuck it" and didn't make one...though they could have done it, threw a promotion for the OMGR4R3!!1! version, and made even better sales.

I think every game should have a rare gold version.

Well, it's not a gold cart, but I have seen label variations for Zelda: LTTP. One is the solid gold, like in the above picture, and the other is a brown/orange rock design. I think it depends on if the game in question is a Million Seller or not, but I don't know exactly for sure.

The Million Seller version has the brown/orange (and cooler looking, imo) version.

I always wondered that myself .. especially since the N64 got a gold cartridge as well. I would have been all over a golden LttP cartridge.

In a perfect world, every Zelda game would be gold. It should be a law. I remember being bitterly disapointed with the grey SNES cart and its one of the reasons I never bought the game new. Now that I think about it, unless the game is "limited edition" or has cool preorder goodies, I wait and buy it used.

I would be all over a gold cart for Lttp as well. It's my favorite Zelda game to date. I'm sure they knew the game would sell well since it was the "Oot" of the 16 bit erra.

As long as Twilight Princess is printed on a gold disc, I'll be happy.

Why are Zelda games on gold cartridges anyway? Whats the story behind it?

It is supposed to be golden like the Triforce. Also, I'm sure Nintendo did that to give the game an edgier, more adventurous look (gold=adventure=treasure...just ask Indiana).

I'd guess because 1) it'd be eye catching, 2) because the goal of many fantasy games is to collect treasure, so making the cartridge gold would make it appear to be "treasure", thus getting the gamer in the fantasy mood and 3) (which could bind the above points together) because the original LoZ was pretty much the start of a new genre, so they made it "special". The concept was so popular they continued the trend...except for LttP and the Game Boy games.

I wonder if it's because the type of plastic they used for the SNES carts. As I've seen, if you don't take care of Zelda and Zelda II the paint easily peels off. SNES carts have a kind of texture to them so maybe the shiny gold paint wouldn't adhere well, thus making the paint flake even easier. They could have gone with the same color approach as RoboCop vs. Terminator or Killer Instinct (black and red carts respectively). However, the more I think of it, those carts had the same texture and maybe a gold color added to the plastic would make the cart appear an ugly yellow.

Yeah im a sucker for weird packaging.

Love the Red Spiderman game on snes.

    OR black killer instinct.

I think it even worked on pc... Back before they standardized software packaging because wal mart threw a bitch fit they would have gimmick boxes to get sales. I remember Tomb Raider 1 because it was shaped like a tomb stone "I think" And Nam or "Napalm" was shaped like an ammo box.

Its a bummer they have standardized software sizes now because you wont see huge maps and gimicky "tchotchke or whatever" given away with games much ....wait what was this thread about?

Oh plus Robo cop vs terminator had coolest box ever for snes game imo

Doh! That's right....One of the Spidey games was a red cart (Maximum Carnage?). For some reason KI and "red" came together in my brain.

The RPG "Stonekeep" by Interplay was in the shape of a tombstone. I don't recall Tomb Raider having an oddly shaped box.
