Yes, there are many different versions of The Oregon Trail. It is quite possibly one of the most enduring educational games ever produced, aside from the Carmen Sandiego series.

Unfortunately, the newer versions bear very little resemblance to the Apple II version of old.

If you like fighting game, check out Vanguard Princess.

The game may not work without Japanese fonts. If you want to bypass it, you may want to check out this site.

Ah this is a nice old topic.

I'll add that Home of the Underdogs has since changed their web address. Or rather come under new ownership?

After many years of inactivity on the original creator's part, the webhost of the original Home of the Underdogs went bankrupt. Much of the old content was salvaged, but a lack of agreement on how to proceed with the reconstruction of the site means that there are now three or four new version of the site in independent operation. I think only one of them has a reasonable number of downloads, however.

Google "Castle of the Winds" for a PC RPG that always has been and still is free. Random generated levels and a sequel!

What's the best spawn of the Underdog?

I'm using Hotud.org at the moment.

Here is a site: http://www.classicdosgames.com/ They actually get permission from the original distributors to offer it, too.

http://www.gog.com/en/frontpage/pp/b...abfeb199dc1f1f Has older PC games that have been converted to run on XP and Vista and plenty of goodies like avatars and PDF manuals are included. It isn't free but usually very cheap. I was able to get Mean Streets and Martian Memorandum (1991) together for a single price of 6 bucks, and it runs on my Vista with no problemlo! Also will run on XP.

It most certainly is a very cool site, but much of the formerly-commercial stuff there can be found elsewhere (such as at liberatedgames.com ).

Then for an emulator personally I recommend APPLEWIN <-(click) It's so hassle free, it's great. Really

The browser thing is ok (just play the game here if you want to go that route: http://www.virtualapple.org/oregontraildisk.html ) but I prefer to have it running full screen and in green monochrome (using the handy dandy button on the right) So it's AppleWin for me

Awesome emulator. Never knew about it before. Thanks .

If you would do this, I would sooooooooo appreciate it. I've searched for hours and I can't find a 4th edition download ANYWHERE :/ I used to play it for hours and hours when I was a kid.
