Default Does Pac-Man have a tail???

Ok, I'm a math teacher and we were discussing > and < today and the kids said it they learned that Pac-Man ate the bigger number. Somehow they got on the question of whether Pac-Man has a tail. So, what's the opinion here of the experts? Does Pac-Man have a tail? While we're at it, what living creature does Pac-Man most emulate?

No I don't believe so, but if he did, I think he would be a sperm cell.

Lol, that analogy that greater than/less than symbols are Pac-Man have been around since I was a kid! How was it even possible to teach that stuff before Pac-Man was around? In a way I'm a bit surprised that kids today would even know Pac-Man... do you ever have any that don't?

In that one bad box cover (Atari 800?) he's got gangly legs, gym shorts and buck teeth, but no tail!

Before Pac-Man, i was told they used alligators to represent those symbols. I think they still do in some children's textbooks.

That's the analogy I was taught when I was a young'un. I remember the alligator or the shark always wants to eat the most people - which number of people is bigger.

Nowadays, a kid would go home, complain of alligator related nightmares, and I'd lose my teaching certificate!

I told them it was an alligator (how I learned) and as an attempt to get them to give up on Pac-Man, I asked them what = (equal to) would represent. One student felt it is Pac-Man's tail and he rallied support. I was going to say the one alligator invited a buddy over and they each ate, but I never got there.

It took me until my University education to realize that the '<' and '>' symbols actually weren't supposed to be pac-mans and were actually showing that since the convergent side is smaller, the number on that side is smaller.
And no, I Pacman doesn't have a tail, and neither does < or >

I looked in my personal library for the answer to this conundrum. According to the exhaustive compendium The Florę and Faunę of Pac-Land, "young paclings are born with a tadpole-like tail, which shrinks as they approach adulthood, finally shrinking into a vestigal nubbin located at the base of the tailbone just above the anus".

    Wow, pretty graphic!

We've hashed out the greater than/less than thing before.

    greater then, less then= pacman

As for whether or not Pac-Man has a tail, I have never seen a tail on Pac-Man in any way, shape or form. You can tell them safely that no, he does not have a tail.

I see where this rumor started.....he leaves a trail, but certainly does not have a tail.

And knowing is half the battle.
