We need more people in Tradewars!

What's Tradewars? It's a BBS Door that's been around since ancient times (that's the late 80s to you youngin's). It's an online universe where alliances are made, planets are built, and wars are fought. Now that winter's approaching quickly, you've got nothing else to do but to play!

We're running it on the bbs: telnet://particlesbbs.dyndns.org or you can use a Java term program at http://www.particles.org or http://www.retroputing.net

Even in the primitive text-only 1980s I could never get into Tradewars. Tried to like it but never grew on me. I preferred Elite -same deal- trading but more action.

Man, this game is totally addictive... and it just gets better with more people playing. Anyone who's new to the game should really read the General Help section on the link that icbrkr posted... it's not a good idea to just wing it in this game.

Has anyone else noticed that there seems to be quite a few Ferrengi in the universe? I really should trade in my CargoTran for something with a bit more muscle to it so I can fight back. If anyone finds their homeworld and decides to attack it, count me in!

Any idea what your alignment has to be to get a Federal Commission?

Guys, add sector 331 to your avoid list. I collided with something in that sector and destroyed my ship completely. Whatever space debris is in that sector now includes bits of my Battleship.

I haven't played Tradewars since I was 8 years old! When I played, it was strictly turn-based. From the looks of things, you can now have more than one player playing at the exact same time. I will basically have to re-learn everything, mainly because it has been so long, but also because I am sure the game is very different now.

BTW, are any of these custom clients any good, or should I just use telnet? Also, why telnet and why not the more secure ssh?

It's still turned based, it's just you can have multiple people playing their turns at the same time.

Telnet as it's a BBS - SSH isn't needed. The custom clients are normally for people running a TWGS system - basically Tradewars without a BBS.

Oddly, I keep getting kicked off the server though - it just freezes up.

And a durn Ferengi took out most of my fighters on my 4th turn. That sucked.

Sheesh, this discussion brings back memories. Just the other day I found my old TW2002 registration letter. I ran a dialup board in the early 90's. I have noticed a lot of telnet bbses lately.. I miss the old dialup days (no I am not an old fart.. 28!) I may have to get on there and play

Why is ssh not needed? telnet is not secure, so somebody could steal your username and password. ssh is basically encrypted telnet. Are you sure there are no ssh based tradewars servers?

Dude, it's a retro-gaming BBS that you're using to play Trade Wars. It's not like you're typing in your credit card numbers and stuff. Take off the tinfoil hat.

Bouncing this topic a bit. The universe is doing pretty well, but the Ferrengi have basically all but secured themselves with 800,000 fighters in sector 888. We need some more manpower to take them out.
