Default Landstalker: the treasures of king knole: Show the love

Does anyone else think this one of the greatest damn games ever? Or is it just me?

I bought it when it was fresh but I'm ashamed to say it was one of the games that defeated me I could never get the jumps and FRIK is it hard. I eventually just moved on to other games without ever finishing it. Maybe sometime I'll pick it up again :P

I friggin LOVE Landstalker! That game is so bloody hard It took me a solid 3 months to beat it back in the day, and probably a month of that was because I was stuck in the crypt with the mummies and couldn't solve the puzzle (this was before FAQs, people).

The only downside to the game IMO was the incredibly memorably super-weak ending. Easily one of the worst endings I've ever seen to a game.

Funny you should mention Landstalker, because it's pretty much been the only thing I've been playing for the past week. Hell, just a few minutes ago, I ended up at the creepy town on the edge of King Nole's Labyrinth. The toughest maze in the game awaits me... and I await it. But anyway, I must say that this is one of those games that highly makes me regret my Nintendo fanboyism in my Elementary School days.

At first, I was a bit standoffish towards the isometric perspective, but as I look at it now, I honestly couldn't see the game without it. As a friend of mine said, the primary emphasis on the game is not found in its battles, but in the innovative and challenging dungeons. Usually, puzzle-solving in an adventure game highly irks me, but I've found it to be a delight to accomplish Landstalker's cerebral challenges!

And as I said before, a cerebral challenge awaits me... I'm thinking that I'll have to devote an entire afternoon to the Labyrinth.

The control always kicked my ass... I never could play it very well.

In contrast, i had a lot more fun with Light Crusader, but one of these days I'm going to take another stab at Landstalker.

    I sure liked Dark Savior

One of the only games where my dad and I worked together to complete. We finally did it back in October of 1998.

I like it but I've never finished it. I got discouraged in the huge forest maze the last time I played. It just doesn't hold my attention as well as Alundra does.

First I am going to say, anyone playing this game need a genesis offical 6 button pad. Here is a link to the one you want. It has the best d pad. Exactly like the sega saturn controller d pad. Don't get those crap S style ones.

    http://cgi.ebay.com/Sega-Brand-6-But...QQcmdZViewItem

Sotenga, the city I believe you are talking about is Destel. That when the game is almost over. You have to beat the game. The first time I saw the boss I was amazed. I never seen graphics like that on a genesis game. Of course now it wont be anything special.

I bought Landstalker right when it came out. I remember having trouble with the crypt puzzles also. Expecially the one where it says he turned and disappeared. I remember being amazed when I figured that out.

One of the parts that gave me the most trouble was Greenmaze. That place was so confusing.

I would have to say my favorite parts were fighting inside Tibor, the huge tree. I love the music in the warp trees. My fovorite city would have to be Verla. I don't know why, I just thought it was really cool.

I am also interested in knowing if anyone found Fridays home? It is next to Mirs castle. You can go in there, but there are doors that appear to be unreachable. Just wondering if anyone found out if it's possible to get in any of the doors?

Also wondering if anyone found out what all the special items in the shops are for? I guess depending on what store you tell that guy to make decides the items that he sells. Pretty much all the items seem to be useless. One of them tells you how much of the game is completed. Other than that I can't remember finding any good uses for the items.

For anyone interested, there was a strategy guide made for the game. Unfortunately the one I own is German. There was no usa release for a guide. There is also the Encyclopedia Landstalker. A Japanese guide that I have heard is a beautiful guide, with full color maps of every area.

I actually own the Japanese version of this game, and the usa version. I have noticed no differences in the games. The only difference is the manual. The japanese one is in color of course, and has a full color photo of the picture in the back of the book with Nigel swinging on that rope.

I don't know why, but Landstalker is my favorite game ever. Right up there with Spellcaster for the sega master system, and Wonder boy in monster World for sega genesis AKA Dynastic hero for the trubo duo. Maybe its cause I grew up playing the game, or maybe it's the excellent graphics, music, and solid short story that has just the right mix or seriousness and actual comedy thats funny. Whatever it is all I know is Landstalker is one game every collector should at least complete and give a chance before they cry about the isometric 3/4 view. The game is not hard to play.

    Default Love/Hate

Awesome game. I loved it. I hated it too. Could not stop playing it, put a hole in my door after punching it (the isometric jumping is frustrating). I just about beat it. Was at the end boss.

I played this earlier this year, then played Shining in the Darkness after it. Possibly the best two games I ever played in a row to completion (or so).

These are the games that left me wanting more. The new game, Beggar Prince, might be the more I wanted...

    Later,
    Trebuken

I remember finishing the game back in 1999 I think, without any FAQS, and only getting help twice from the friend that I borrowed the game from.
Step Back! This is my blast shot!

    Wanna sell the guide?

Shining in the darkness is one great game. I dont know why it's so good. I have never liked any other dungeon crawler, but that game is just sweet.

Landstalker is also made by the people responsibe for the shining force games. There all related.

I'll show the love first by asking you to get the title right! It's King Nole! Nole! Not Knole!

I always like telling the story of how one of my house mates discovered Landstalker in 2004.

I had a Genesis set up on the shared television in the house, and I had maybe 20 games available to play. This house mate was not an active video game player at all. But we did not have cable TV service so there was nothing to watch except our tired collection of DVD movies.

Evidently one day when he was off work he started messing around with my Genesis. When I get home that afternoon I am surprised and delighted to hear the Landstalker BGM when I open the door to the house.

This guy who had not touched a Genesis in over 10 years had found himself enthralled by Landstalker and spent two days playing it through to the end.

As well as being a testament to the timeless game design, it is also a testament to the fact that the control is really not at all difficult. If a non-gamer can beat the game in two days while using a stock 3-button pad, then anyone who complains about the control and the diagonal jumping is really an uncoordinated oaf.

It is such a disappointment that the expanded Landstalker trilogy that was planned for Sony's PSP never came to fruition.

    Unhappy

Sadly, the creator of LandStalker died during 2023. :'(

However, some fans have created a detailed LandStalker Editor software during the last few years for creating your own levels, dungeons, or even entire games for the SEGA Genesis.
