Default Offical Xbox 360 Backwards Compatible list Released

    http://www.next-gen.biz/index.php?op...=1579&Itemid=2

According to Next Gen an MS rep said there would some annoucement today Nov. 11th about the Xbox 360's backwards compatibility.

Hopefully it'll be a list of compatibile title's but right now anythings possible.

MS hasn't released anything yet, at least nothing that's been reported but with any luck we should be hearing something soon.

Part of the report was that Halo 1 and 2 would both be playable, and in 720p instead of the formerly 480p limit. I'm sure that'll elicit several hard-ons around here.

That was yesterday's report. Apparently there's more to come today.

Speaking of the halo comparision, here's the comparision picture.

I don't think Halo was made for 1080

Er, is that really a fair comparison? The 480 one is twice as zoomed as t'other one, right? Or does that make no difference? And good lord this whole 480 business confuses me, can someone explain?

Yup. The 480p picture must be zoomed in to twice the size of the 720p image just to get the same proportions to account for the larger resolution of a 720p image.

If you zoomed in the 720p image to the same level that the 480p image has been, the pixels would be the same size. That's really not a good comparison because then you'd only be able to show a quarter of the image which is shown in the same *real* space (on an HDTV) as the 480p image would be

I don't get it. They show "comparison shots" of a high-def image that would make you puke, but I can hook my Genny up through an RF switch and it looks great.

    Something smells fishy.

The only thing that stinks here is your lack of ability to read the article.

If you had bothered to read, you would notice that the 360 does not output the same way the Xbox does, and Bungie does not yet have the tools necessary to compare 720p images to original Xbox stills with direct feed. The HD image (which looks about 8 billion times better than the original Xbox image) is a still captured from video taken from the console. Kind of like a copy of a copy.

And I really can't understand how you can think those HD shots looks crappy. FSAA on old Xbox games is about the greatest thing they could have done for backwards compatability, percentage of the library be damned.

So how does this backward compatibility work? I keep hearing the word emulation used but I was always under the impression that it took a ton of CPU power to emulate a moderately modern console. I can't imagine that the 360 is THAT much more powerful than the Xbox that it can emulate it accurately through software.

3 cores running at 3.2 ghz that's the equivalent of 3 3.2 ghz hyper thread processors running in parellel. That's more then enough power to emulate the original Xbox in software.

    THAT'S IT?

No NFL Madden 2006 or NCAA Football 2006? No Dead or Alive XBV? No Sheume II? No Panzer Dragoon Orta? No Metal Gear Solid II?

There's almost nothing in my current library of games for the XBox that WOULD play on the 360!

Damn, that means I'd have to keep my XBox around and plugged in and find room for it. I was hoping to be able to 'upgrade' and sell the old system like I do with the PS3 and the Rev. This bites. :/

Hmmm.. only 3 of my games are on that list. Makes my decision to wait on the 360 a little easier.

Remember it is a rolling list though. More and more will be supported each month.

I'd imagine that anyone with a 360 dev kit can work on it. If Microsoft has any brains at all, they'd give serious attention to this area. That's a pretty sad backwards-compatibility list at launch. Time will tell if things will substantially improve. In a year or two it won't matter as much, but this has gotta hurt for some people who were planning on just using the 360 for all their games, as well as those who never had an Xbox to begin with, but might be interested in Xbox titles for their shiny new 360. Bleh.
