Default I Need a GTA Clone

Lately I've had a hankering to play something with an open ended, freeroaming world, which a bunch of stuff to do, kinda like San Andreas, but I've been out of the loop for a while on current games, and I have no ideas what, if any newer games are like this.

So I need some suggestions, it doesn't have to bloody or violent or anything like that, I just want something mission based, open world, with a bunch of fun minigames and sidequests. If it features a huge map and character customization like SA that's a plus. Also it needs to be on either PS2, GCN, or DS, cause that all I have at the moment.

Also to prevent flamewars and smart alecs, I'm aware that GTA did not invent the idea of this trype of gameplay, I just used it as a example becuase it's the most popular and universally know game in that type of genre.

Try State of Emergency or The Getaway for the ps2.

Yeah Ive read Spiderman 2 has "open ended" type gameplay never played it myself though

Also I suggest Manhunt even though it isnt "open ended" like GTA it still has that great Rockstar "feel" and I think its Rockstar at its best to be honest

check out the quick review of MANHUNT on my Blog to see if it may interest you http://www.digitpress.com/forum/weblog.php?w=50

It doesn't have the same depth as the GTA series, but Simpsons-Hit and Run is one of the best GTA clones I've played, and it's even better if you're a fan of the show.

I had Hit & Run and I sold it after I was done with it. Was way to repetitive for my tastes.

Psychonauts isn't like GTA, but it's open with tons of missions to do, and a big "world" to run around in. It's also a perfect 10 in my book.

PC/Playstation - Urban Chaos. A totally underated GTA style game, that was actually out before GTA 3. I guess it's a mix of Tomb Raider and GTA, as the emphasis is on combat and agility than on driving.

You're a police chick caught up in the middle of a gourvement consipiracy (or something, long time since played). Awesome FMVs, 2 characters, weapons, fantastic weapons and locals.. very ahead of its time.

The only problem is the free-roamable levels are seperate due to the hardware.

If it's as good as i remember, highly reccomended.

    Some GTA-style games I like:

True Crime: Streets of LA (there's a new one coming out next month that looks pretty good)
    The Getaway 1 & 2
    Increcible Hulk: Ultimate Destruction
Roadkill (re-playing this - it's like GTA meets Twisted Metal)
    Mercenaries
    Mafia
    Driver 3

Most of these games (except for Hulk) can be gotten very cheaply.

All of the below are fairy old PC games. WIth execpton, they'd all run on my P300. I know it's not what you asked for exactly, but I missed your console specifications the first time I read your post

The Nomad Soul, while not totally open-ended it's fun to hop into a taxi and switch it to manual drive and just go explore. It also has Bowie in it and was made by the same fellows who recently bought us Farenheit! What more could you ask for?

A review can be found here!

How about Morrowind? There's more beards and pointy ears, but the world is massive and you can go any which way you want with your character. There's a whole load of stuff you can do, more or less whenever. It's a little slow to start with, but stick with it and you'll find it rather fun, if you like that sort of thing.

    Have another review!

If you liked that then there's also its predecessor Daggerfall which is pretty damn nice.

    Guess what this is?

If you want something a little different I'd try out Hardwar. Again, a huge world with a do anything, go anywhere feel but in this you pilot "moths" about a futuristic city. The music is oddly hypnotic.

    Yep, another one.

you quite simply must play Mafia and you quite simply must play it on PC.

When you beat the game and unlock Free Ride and Free Ride Extreme, it's like unlocking a whole new game. It's a shame the console ports omitted Free Ride Extreme, as I felt it was an awesome little bonus that added a megashittonload to the replay value of the game.

The core game is also insanely good, with city/driving missions similar to Grand Theft Auto 3 but also with on foot missions that played out a little like Max Payne. Excellent storyline with some really memorable characters, good voice acting, and some BADASS cutscenes. Just don't forget that the cars don't turn on a time and that you'll have to slow down to take corners and you'll have a blast, i promise you.

Oh, and try to get the boxed PC version if possible. It comes with a little map of the city that is absolutly invaluable for Free Ride Extreme mode and handy for normal gameplay. Failing that, just pick up the $10 jewel case version from Walmart and zone out for a few days.

Tied for best game of 2002, imo (with No One Lives Forever 2 )

Mafia was a great game. I remember the first level was hard for me, because you didn't really know the town but once you got used to everything it was awesome.

Another PC game that I loved was Hitman... dunno if thats what your looking for but a game that I enjoyed.

If you're not needing a high level of violence and you want a unique and engrossing gameplay experience then I would suggest Shenmue for the Dreamcast. I know you said PS2, GCN, DS only but consider that a used DC + a VMU + a copy of Shenmue will set you back at most $35 to $40. So financially it's more or less the same commitment. Think about it. You won't be disappointed.

Yes I agree Shenmue is a great recomendation with fun exploration hell you can spend hours in the arcade alone playing afterburner, Spaceharrier or darts wich me and by buddy would play darts for hours on end

Oooh, I second this game! On top of being an awesome game, it's got a TON of different mod packs you can install to enhance the game! Highly recommended!
