    Default NES top loader problem

I just got the top loader that I ordered off of E-bay today, but most of the games I have seem to work. The Mario Bros 3 that came with it and the Mario Bros 2 work right off the bat, but every other game I have to try repeatedly.

I've already tried cleaning the games several times, some work for the time, but if I turn the game off I get nothing but green screen. So could it be that the connector is dirty? Or would I have to open up the carts and clean them that way, which would give me an excuse to finally order the screw bit.

Luckily the seller has a "return if not satisfied" policy, so if anything I'll just send it back.

Probably just dirt. Just because its a "top loader" does not mean its perfect.

Looks like I spoke too soon, I didn't realise how much elbow grease was needed to get this done. I used a cotton ball on one this time and despite all of the Q-Tips I used on it, the cotton ball came out grey. It's amasing how much dirt is inside such a small space, I guess it's time for my second trip to walgreens for some more cotton balls.

Most people's problems with their toaster NES are actually due to their dirty cartridges. But the toaster NES gets blamed. The reason why newer clones have less of an issue is that they use a simple hack: they make the cart connector extremely tight, so as to scrape through any grime on the cart's contacts. In the long run, these tight connectors will simply wear away the cart's contacts faster, which is a bad thing.

The best thing to do is to get 99.9% pure anhydrous isopropyl alcohol and clean your carts with them using Q-tips or if you can, cotton swabs. Then keep your carts covered when not played, and before playing them, if they haven't been cleaned in a while, due the cleaning regime again.

Putting a dirty cart into a toaster or toploader will eventually require you to open up your toaster or toploader and do some serious cleaning on the system itself. Hence it is best to never put a dirty cart into your system.
