Default The Xbox is 4 today.

It's hard to beleive that it's only been 4 years since the big box appeared on the scene and only 3 years since the inception of Live.

Sitting here now, facing the launch of the new Xbox 360 in exactly 7 days i've come to realize the magnitude of the impact the Xbox has made on the market.

Any one have any thoughs they'd like to share to celebrate the anniversary of it's birth?

After all who though the Xbox would be where it is today?

The xbox is four years old? I just got mine a few months back lol.

First was PS2 the christmas after it came out
2nd was the Cube, spent my whole first paycheck on it
lastly was the Xbox a few months ago...

Same will be true for the next-gen consoles lol.

Happy 4 year anniversary XBox! Why, I remember this day 4 years ago...it was the most glorious day of my life. Until 7 days from now, and hopefully that will be the most glorious day of my life.

Hmm. Don't have a PS2 so this is my most-used next gen system (outside the PC, that is).

A few weeks ago I bought a copy of Airforce Delta Storm locally that I *thought* was sealed. Turned out it wasn't, but when I opened it I saw that somebody had smuggled another game disc in there. Hallelujah!

    Some of my favorites:

Airforce Delta Storm: Gets a bit tedious in places, but there's plenty of things to recommend it. Good control, great models and locations, and a gigantic roster of aircraft as well as a remix of the Twinbee music ingame (among other things). Still haven't gotten every plane, but I haven't played in a while.

Breakdown: This has been an interesting title with lots of areas that look great interspersed with areas that are completely bland. Plagued by some bad design decisions (lock on in an all-FPS game? For shame, for shame), but there are some redeeming moments and the production values are pretty high. Interesting note - there seems to be constant "tape player" background noise in the audio player (try turning the sound knob nearly all the way down to hear it clearly).

Halo: It's been a few years since I played this, but it was good fun. As opposed to, you know, bad fun, whatever that may be, and wherever it may be found (Brute Force, which I could play if I wanted to, doesn't seem to meet my definition for "fun," good or otherwise).

Ninja Gaiden: Easily one of the best games I've ever played.

Otogi 2: The game's had a few actual programming crashes on me, and there's slowdown in spots (not too bad actually), and the whole feel of the fighting system is rather bland compared to Ninja Gaiden - simple attacks and such. Still great - you can knock enemies into other ones for a chain reaction! Highly rated, though I'm currently stuck on the Ghost ships destroying a magical seal level.

Silent Hill 4: Great conversion of this game. No idea if it adds anything graphically, and it needs an improved combat system, but it was interesting right to the end. Got that blasted 21 Sacraments ending, though, and after discovering the chainsaw I don't particularly care to try playing through again. There's just better things to do.

yeah it sucks how all these money hungry companys start killing off their systems too early. I think the xbox, ps2, gamecube were really finally being able to use all the gaming power that they have. Now with the new systems are getting ready to launch it will be a couple of years until the game companys can pump out the graphics and whatnot that the next gen systems are capable of. Oh well I am one of those people that will have to go buy a new hi-def tv so my gaming experience will be worth it. Damn you sony, microsoft, and nintendo.

I remember it's release back on Nov 15th, 2001. I was working for GameStop at the time.

The hype, the magazines, the crowds. That was a blast and the media was going nuts over the fact two systems launched so close together.

I honestly felt Mircosoft wasn't gonna make it compared to Sony and Nintendo during the first few months. I felt Mircosoft couldn't understand what gamers wanted. (Bottom line there, is money talks, and bs walks)

The main reason why I wanted to get an Xbox was simply because of Silent Hill 2 Restless Dreams. When they told us it had extra features, I knew I had to grab a copy. (Little did we know that Sony was fixing to release that verison in fall of 2002).

My personal favorites, still has to be Halo, SH2, Return to Castle Wolfenstien, and right now, Fable The Lost Chapters.
These cartridges are dirty as hell and I'm not going to take it anymore!

Microsoft is playing the console game very well.. If Xbox360 gets Square/Enix, Rockstar, and EA to open on Xbox360 then there is the end of the PS3.

Just like the Atari in 1977. The Nintendo in 1985. Or the Sony Playstation in 1996.

Course we must remember Atari went bankrupt, Nintendo is now in third place, and Sony is releasing their console a year behind Microsoft. Fortune is fickle.

Doesn't sound like the "best" on the Xbox are all that great.

It's four years old and I haven't even played one yet!!! I suppose now is as good as time as any. With the 360 coming out Xbox hardware and software should see a favorable drop in price. Still hard to believe that four years have gone by and I haven't even touched an Xbox controller.

Those are just some of my favorites, listed in five minutes, so I've left out a lot of titles. I've also been picking up games almost at random (not quite, but close), so I get some clunkers. Airforce Delta Storm is available, I believe, for a variety of systems (I think even the GBA, in a different format), and Silent Hill 4 is on the PS2 and PC as well.

Ninja Gaiden really shows off the XBox's capabilities. You've at least got to admit that one's fantastic. Otogi 2 is really pretty, and the gameplay is great fun, but seems a bit shallow (though there definitely is a bit of a learning curve).

Surprised nobody's taking time out to congrat the ol plastic box.

Anyhow, I saw two other XBox games I have:
    Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath
    and
    Phantom Dust

Both are very good - Oddworld especially, though.

(points to cob-web covered Xbox) I' t'ain't. Nothing on the Xbox I can't get on my PS2 or PC.

No offense, but I came in here KNOWING that Kevin would simply be repeating what davespec said.

Again, the Xbox has great games you can't get elsewhere. That's true of the PS2 - more so - but in terms of graphical niceties and depth of play, some of the XBox lineup does stuff that the PS2 simply can't. Take the huge worlds of Oddworld stranger - there's very rarely any loading at all, and when there is it's only for 3 seconds, at most. I think even the loading on game start is limited to 5 seconds.

Very, very smooth, and yet if you get past the character designs and look at the architecture, you'll also see the game is more detailed than anything on the PS2 (in terms of polygons, but some of the areas here are incredible - the inside of shops in particular; it's very close to prerendered quality).
