Default What number is the 360 as in US released systems?

Ok, so I have a wierd question to ask. Say that you number all "official US video game console releases". Computers do not count. Portables count, educational devices don't, and updated consoles dont count unless they take a different medium(game boy, game boy color, game boy advance, game boy ds would all count). ITo make things easier I guess we can count the N-gage, Tapwave, and Gizmondo. Obviously we would start with the Odyssey as #1(I count it). What number would the Xbox 360 be?

    What about pong consoles?

Let's see if I can do this by release..(minus pong consoles)

    -Odyssey 1
    -Fairchild Channel F
    -Atari VCS
    -RCA Studio 2
    -Odyssey 2
    -Bally Astrocade
    -Mattell Intellivision
    -Entex Adventurevision
    -Colecovision
    -Vectrex
    -Atari 5200
    -NES
    -Atari 7600
    -Sega Master System
    -TurboGrafx 16
    -Nintendo Gameboy
    -Sega Genesis
    -Atari Lynx
    -Super NES
    -Neo-Geo
-Phillips CD-i (this is debatable wether or not it's a console)
    -3D0
    -Atari Jaguar
    -Sega Saturn
    -Sony Playstation
    -N64
    -Virtual Boy
    -Sega Dreamcast
    -Neo-geo pocket
    -PS2
    -Game Boy Advance
    -Xbox
    -Gamecube
    -Nokia NGage
    -Tapwave
    -Nintendo DS
    -Sony PSP
    -Gizmondo
    -X360

I don't know wether or not to include the wonderswan since I think I've only ever seen 1 in my entire life (and it was an import). I also didn't know if I should've included the 32x, Sega CD, and Nomad since they were all basically updates or cosmetic changes to the Genesis.

I'm sure I missed something... Anyone, feel free to fill in the blanks. Sorry about the lengthy post.

Let's dump Pongs, the Wonderswan doesn't fit the criteria (great system though), and the CD-i definitely should be included. Nothing strikes me as missing from that list.

    Oops.. Didn't realize I hit 6 instead of 8.

I guess I considered the CD attachments for all the consoles part of the original systems. I didn't know wether to include them or not.

I did totally forget the GG, though. Jeez, Sega had alot of stuff out in the early 90's!

What about the X'EYE and Game.com? The Nomad should be counted, it'd a portacle system. Don't forget the Sega CDX. That one in particular is very cool. It plays Sega CD games, Genesis Games, and music CD's.

Neo Geo CD was a standalone unit. Turbo Duo was released in the states too wasn't it?

I second that motion. Make them all count as seperate units, just because!

If the CD-i counts, does the Nuon count? It does have its own unique library. Can't play Merlin Racing anywhere else.

I went by not using the same thing twice. Example - The GBC is essentially the GB hardware, just a color screen. Same with the Turbo Duo. It's just the TG16, with the CD rom built in. No changes were made to the hardware. This is why I was debating on putting the Sega CD on the list - as the CD unit added a co-processor, scaling/rotation, and some more memory to the Genesis hardware. The 32x was just an expansion of the genesis hardware, but it's not a stand-alone unit.

I left out computers that had floppy disc drives or were considered 'personal computers'. (ie, the Atari home computers, Apple 2, Commodore Vic-20 & 64, Amiga, PC, MAC).

I did leave out the Emerson Arcadia and MB Microvision. Totally forgot about those... And I always thought the NeoGeo CD unit was an expansion. I never knew it was a stand alone! I just learned something new!

As for the Nuon and LaserActive - that's another tricky one. They fall in with the CD-i - It can be considered a system, but it wasn't built for the sole purpose of playing games.

Laseractive was never actually released, was it? I've never seen one. I remember seeing ads for them, but I've never seen one.

One question I have to all you Neo-geo fans... Was the Hyper Neo 64 ever released as a home console?

Sure. 18 LD games were released. For sale on ebay quite regularly ($150+ usually).

Several different definitions for what a console is in various DP threads. I'm not attached to any of them.

A Commodore 64 could be a console (it has cartridges), but is more commonly counted a computer (howabout the Commodore GS system that was cart only? don't think it was a US release though).

Smiga CD-32 was a consolized Amiga PC...cool like the Commodore GS, and I believe it had a very limited US release.

Atari XE does not require its keyboard so much which is why I mentioned it.

Personally I consider handhelds another category as well...

The differences between the GB & GBC are comparable to the differences between the Atari 2600 & 7800.

The GBC was backwards compatible. It has it's own software that couldn't run on the original Game Boy hardware.

Between the Game Boy and Game Box Pocket, you have a stronger arguement. But I guess that depends on the definition of "system" versus "model".
