Third party controllers are generally poor and third party memory cards are prone to random deletions. If those things don't bother you then save yourself the $2-$3 difference. The only third party controller I've ever bought that was the PS2 Logitech and while wireless and pretty good.. it's still a few notches below the official controller for overall quality.

Depends on the 3rd party item in question. I generally stay away from any 3rd party stuff for modern consoles; they're often (not always) of lesser quality. As mentioned, 3rd party memory cards in particular seem to be rife with crappiness.Originally Posted by Whiskers the Wonder Cat
The only 3rd party controllers I've bought in the last few years are light guns for the DC and Xbox, and only because there aren't any first party versions in the US. I can vouch for the MadCatz DC lightguns -they're very good all the way 'round.
I'll also vouch for the XArcade stick - high quality, low price and works with lots of consoles.
I've heard good things about some of the 3rd party DDR mats, but no longer remember which ones. One of our DDR experts can probably point 'em out.

Some 3rd Party stuff is taken as the Official stuff, or is Licensed equiptment.
Logitech has the rights to this gens (PS2/XB) wireless controllers, and they are deemed the 'Official' ones. They also tend to release a good amount of licensed equiptment (so its developed in conjunction with the makers of the sytem). Nyko has Officially licensed Memory cards for the PS2 and some other stuff as well. Lots of the ASCII stuff (for the PS) is official equiptment.
But then again some brands like Pelican and other 'store' brands are usually crap.
Because it makes no attempt to be great, it is therefore extremely great.

ASCII and Hori make quality stuff. Generally unless it's something to fill a void where there is no first-party item, I don't touch 3rd party.
Certain 3rd party DC controllers blow a fuse on the system then no controller will work. Easy fix if you know how. I've also seen this on the PS1 in both cases mostly with the programable controlers.
3rd party ps1 memory cards were often slighty larger than the 1st party and frequent use expanded the port cause problems as well.
Buyatari, have you ever seen the 6 button ASCII pads for the DC? Are those alright?
I'm shocked that no one has mentioned the NES Game Genie. That thing has helped kill more 72-pin connectors than should be legal.
One the good side of the spectrum are all of those third-party ROM carts for the Saturn.
That's true. Especially the 4 in 1 RAM carts. I've never heard from anyone that it fucks up the Saturn.
However, there is a glitch in certain carts, not all, where you can't play later Capcom games.
I can vouch for those ASCII Dreamcast pads, theyre great.
Oh, and when I used to work at babbage's I used to tell customers not to buy the Gamestop/Pelican pads. Utter Crap.

...which can easily be fixed or if your console is hardmodded for US/JPN and you're only using the cart for the 4M RAM expansion you're fine. From what I heard the flaw is with like three games the bad cartridges can't work as both a converter and RAM expansion at the same time, but again, it can be fixed by breaking a trace and soldering in a jumper.
I have a import Saturn, I guess I'm ok. I do have some U.S games, but they don't require RAMs anyways. Btw, it's ok for 1MB as well right(So many questions...)?
Agreed on Hori. Just about everything they make is super high quality.
When N64 came around I bought one of those kits that included a bunch of trinkets.. hey it was either get another controller, or get a funny looking one with a memory card, extension cable, and cleaning kit for the same price. Needless to say, at the time the first party N64 mem card I had erased twice, while the cheapy 3rd party one still holds what I originally put on it some 7-8 years ago.
Other than the game genie, I only really own 3rd party NES junk, a madcatz ps2 controller, and a 32 mb 3rd party ps2 mem card. The 32 mb card is great, since its much larger space wise, and if it evers fails, it didnt cost me a dime anyway
I also found that any of those "trinket pack" 3rd party N64 items made by Performance were exceptionally good. I have some large controllers for the Dreamcast that are made by them as well.
For Sony, i would have no idea. I've always followed advice given to me during the PSX days. If it's Sony, use 1st party.
I've never had a 3rd party device mess up my system.
I once had to get my PS2 fixed, for something that had nothing to do with third party products, and over the phone they asked, "Have you used any non-Sony products on your PS2 or have you modified it in anyway?" If I said yes, the repairs wouldn't have been covered under my warranty anymore, so I lied and got it fixed for just the price of shipping.
So if you need your warranty for something, just say you haven't used any 3rd party props, period. They won't know.
