but our princess is in another castle"

I'm working on an essay for my Ludology class, and felt inclined to pull out SMB3 again. After sitting down and playing through it, I had to laugh again at the ending.
I remember the first time I beat it, and when the princess said that, my sister freaked out :P.
Just wondering what everyone here thought the first time they heard this in SMB3.

I got pissed initially. When she said "just kidding", I rolled my eyes. Now, though, I think it's pretty funny. It's one of the first examples of an "inside joke" in a game that I can think of.

Yeah, leave it to a game like SMB3 to poke fun at itself. I was also freaked out the first time I saw it.

That's like all the inside jokes in Paper Mario and Paper Mario: Thousand Year Door. Like the whale that says "Wow, they should call you Dr Mario!" when Mario makes him feel better, and I haven't had a chance to play TYD yet but my boyfriend says someone calls him Jumpman in that. There's probably more, but it's been a year since I beat Paper Mario and I haven't played TYD yet.

I was playing SMB3 with a friend of mine. We kind of flew through the game. So the worlds were going by at a good clip. When we saw this, the initial reaction was GTFO! Then we cracked up and started over doing a more thorough run through of the great SMB3.

I'm pretty sure the first time I played it, I knew she was kidding. You can tell that the final castle is actually the final castle. Still makes me laugh though... because it shows me how little of a sense of humor the programmers had.

I recently beat Mario and Luigi: Superstar Saga.....there's a TON of inside jokes in that game, some of them very funny and creative. Highly reccomended to everyone.
