    Default DREAMCAST HUMMING!!

Well my dreamcast has started to humm after a short period of time say an hour. Then the longer it stays on say 2-4 hours it gets a very loud humming noise ,sounds like its struggling..? Does anyone have this problem or know how to fix it. I was thinking to get another one for a replacement? any help would be appreciated..

something is unbalanced in your DC. check the disc if it has any off center stickers.

I think it may be the fan. I remember an old one that I had used to do that.

Well, it's more likely that it's doing this because it doesn't know the words.

if its a hum its the fan, take a q-tip and poke it in the fan, if it stops humming, it's the fan, if it doesn't something else is terrebly wrong!

Make sure the air holes aren't blocked.

All else fails, I may end up with a spare I can ship you.

The humming is nothing to worry about.

    It's THINKING.

First off, welcome to the forums!

Second, we have a special section for your repair and tweaking needs, it's called the Technical and Restoration Society, if you have any other questions like that you'll get faster and more accurate answers if you post it in there.

As for your problem, don't jump to replacing parts straight away. Spray out your DC fan with some compressed air, there could be something in there creating additional friction, you may want to open your DC up and remove the fan block to clean it out better. (opening a DC is easy, just take your time and take note of how things go together, it's assembled like a sandwhich with different layers between the upper and lower shell)

I haven't worked on a DC in awhile and the last one I did work on was a kiosk model (the fan is different) but you may be able to put a drop of 3 in 1 oil in the fan to smooth it out. Try some compressed air first.

Seriously, why does everyone turn to replacement as the first option?

check to see if there is anything stuck in the fan...

then check to see the fan is not loose. these are the common ereason why the dreamcast hums

All else fails, I have parts from a broken DC if he really needs them.

Godd luck getting the Dreamcast working.
